Fascinating , probably was en route from the Netherlands to England ? those leather book bindings with the coat of arms of Scottish-English Stuart royal family may indicate the dress belonged to them or maybe to Dutch nobility.

Silver also has rather strong anti-microbial properties.

Yeah this one ship wreck had a hand sketched drawing of a naked woman recovered from it…. Wait that was a movie. But I agree with you, the way some things remain and can preserved is crazy

I'm dutch and this news is from November. The box was found in 2014. It took years to carefully explore the content because it is very fragile.

That dress is clearly orange.
Seriously, it's remarkable how well preserved it is.
Cutriss t1_j917vf4 wrote
No, it’s black and blue!

There's two of them. The one from the title is not orange, but also not silver since the silver on it has decayed, but the pattern on it can still be seen (there is a pic of the dress and a pic of the pattern near the end of the article).

I think the silver preserved it since it has antibacterial properties and prob kept stuff from growing on it
ITGenji t1_j93f2ep wrote
There was many other pieces recovered. The silver probably had very little to do with it surviving.

I wonder if the owners of these treasures were on the ship that sank or would they have traveled in a more luxurious vessel.

Very, very cool! Hope they can suss out who the dress was going to and what she did without her dress.

Silver? That dress looks gold to me. Does anyone else see silver?

See the silver lines? That's the silver

Sorry, I was just jokingly trying to revive the old controversy of the dress that nobody could agree the colour of from a few years back.

It was very earlier for me not fully awake. Ans anyways everyone knows it's blue and black

The ship sunk in 1660 it's amazing that they are able to recover intact cloth, let alone an entire dress from the ship. I guess the cold dark water of the North Sea helped to preserve it.
