As a Miami resident, don’t post Miami Herald links unless you warn people to use the same workarounds you need to use when you open a New York Times article (for example, reader mode in safari)

I only pasted what AmputatorBot showed me. Both links work for me fine, I know nothing about Miami or MH, but I know amp links are cancer.

How does reader mode in Safari work?

l3rN t1_j0d69tr wrote

In iOS you click the little "Aa" next to the address bar and it's one of the options in the drop down menu. Idk how it works on Mac but I'd be surprised if it's not something similar

The Snake glyph looks more like a sperm cell.

Maybe they had microscopes…. Maybe ancient aliens showed them reproductive methods…. /s

Weird, both work for me (mobile Firefox and Bromite). Try reader mode in the browser. For paywalls I'd normally recommend https://12ft.io but it doesn't work here.

I wonder why AmputatorBot is banned on r/history!?

It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of concerns over privacy and the Open Web.

Maybe check out the canonical page instead: https://www.sacbee.com/news/nation-world/world/article269970832.html | Miamiherald canonical: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/article269970832.html

Some are “faded” and damaged, some are in places they weren’t expecting, like sides of hills instead of desert floor. If you get PBS, Nova has a recent special out about it. The science involved in finding them is really cool.

A1CST t1_j0ca8jt wrote

168... we have GPS, satellite imaging now and for the past 20+ years and your telling me they JUST found them. Were they even looking? These things are huge!

15

Penkala89 t1_j0cbhd5 wrote

Though there are some famously large geoglyphs, most of the ones in this article were relatively small (10-20ft across).

And the desert is also just ... Huge. As a challenge/demonstration, go to Google Earth/Google Maps, go to the first location that pops up for the Nazca Lines and see how long it takes you to find them/how many you can find.

29

immabettaboithanu t1_j0d356j wrote

These also look harder to discover because the images need lines to show what they look like since they’re likely worn down from being over 2000 years old.

mancow66 t1_j0ccyv3 wrote

If you didn’t read the article one of them is definitely the Simpsons, which would indicate that the ancient Peruvians did indeed predicted the Simpsons.

Between Paywalls and Google Amp it’s frustrating to see an intriguing article and be unable to read or post. We have to assume the headlines are accurate and not misleading.

I kinda “got” something, after being mystified for years on the giant Nazca pictoglyphs. After learning there were small ones, 12’ easily viewed just standing there, someone said “our gods might like this, we’re pretty stoked, they might be too!”. So they basically enlarged a few just by imagining and… there ya go. The big mystery being “why so big and only viewable by air”. Well, they just made small into big.

Otherwise if the first thing you see when you look at a goofy, ancient picture of a human drawn in the dirt is "wow that looks like a racist drawing of an African". . . That means You are the racist, my friend.

Same with people who see orcs in various fantasy settings and think "orcs are like black people".
