You’ll be fine without it, not a reason to upgrade on its own

Dynamic island has very little use. I forgot about it after day 1.

Watch some comparisons on YouTube like this one from Max Tech:

14 Plus vs 14 Pro Max

Dynamic Island is fine, kinda neat at first, but the novelty wears off. I barely notice it anymore besides the bumping equalizer when I have Apple Music running in the background (which admittedly is still kinda cool). But I don't think I'd miss it all that much. Now if I had Air Pods, there are some helpful notifications there I think I would miss.

So in a nutshell, Dynamic Island isn't enough to justify spending $200 more, but there are other differences worth considering like the butter-smooth 120Hz display that adjusts to a perfect 24 FPS when watching movies (and can even go all the way down to 1 Hz for Always On display). GPU-intensive gaming will also have a big leg up on the 14 Pro. Finally, there's a stark difference in camera performance with the 14 Pro over the Plus.

Dynamic island is not that big of a Deal. But it doesn’t matter. So many other things about the 14 plus make that phone a bad deal (to put it simply ) if you want a more in depth explanation you’ll find many on YouTube. The TLDR is don’t get the 14 plus

stulogic t1_ja2301z wrote

I can't think of a single thing Dynamic Island does that I'd miss, perhaps other than switching to music from maps or whatever. It seems like it has the potential to be cool in the future, but it certainly wouldn't bother me if I didn't have it.

InUrGutz t1_ja233lq wrote

You won’t miss what you’ve never had.

That said, I use the island all the time with Spotify in the background. Same goes for background phone calls on speaker. Less intrusive system notifications are also nice but not a big deal.

If you have the extra money I would get a pro model. The display alone is worth it. But again, if you’ve never had a 120hz OLED display you won’t miss that either.

Benny7101 t1_ja24b4c wrote

Same as what others have said. Novelty wears off incredibly quick. Doesn't offer a substantial enough change and I def kinda regret wasting money switching from a 12+. Maybe I should sell....

Great camera though.

The dynamic island is pretty meh. Thought it was a gimmick when it’s released, more so now that I have one. Still don’t understand why they went this route. It protrudes into your content even more. (Yes live activities are nice but notification does almost the same thing)

However I’d say you’ll miss the pro-motion screen and the cameras more than the dynamic island.

Dynamic island is gimmicky love, fr wouldn’t mind going back to the 13 pro max🤣🤣. They’re all the same thing

HerrBadger t1_ja2jbdc wrote

I considered the 14 Pro Max but honestly, I was expecting to be blown away, and I had the exact opposite. I don’t think I’d treat it any different than a notch after regular use.

Went for the 14 Plus, I’m very, very happy with it, and there’s nothing I miss from the Pro that this device doesn’t have.

Crystalagent47 OP t1_ja2m4mv wrote

Finally someone loving the 14 plus, reviews about the plus have been very discouraging but I always wanted the plus, it's kinda the sweet middle spot, neither all Pro features nor all beginner features

2

CJ_2003 t1_ja2nu0x wrote

Personally, the notch is WAY too dated. It’s hideous and in the way. You wouldn’t think it but the tiny bit of screen above the island helps make it disappear. Also 60hz screens are disorienting now. Pro/pro max is the only option imo

2

FinlayTomasMead t1_ja2ot2f wrote

You’re probably better off getting the Pro because of all the features for a tiny bit more, but the 14 Plus is a solid upgrade.

DarkNet-Magic t1_ja2syja wrote

The two primary reasons I upgraded to an iPhone 14 Pro Max was for the Dynamic Island and the upgraded 48 MP camera.

After having my 14 Pro Max for about 4 months now, I’d have to say I could absolutely do without the Dynamic Island. I’m not saying that I dislike it by any means, I actually do love it. It’s a very neat and seamless integration.

However, in my personal experience, I wouldn’t say many of the apps that I use really utilize the Dynamic Island in ways that I thought it would. Honestly, a lot of the apps that have done deep integration with the Dynamic Island charge a subscription fee, and in order to benefit from that integration, you need to pay that subscription fee.

In my everyday use, I would honestly say the only app that I really enjoy having that feature, is when I’m listening to my music in Apple Music. I enjoy being able to expand the Island and control my music without leaving the app that I’m currently using. Otherwise again, I could honestly do without it.

So again, my personal opinion would be to not pick the Pro model solely due to the Dynamic Island. It’s certainly not that amazing of a feature to justify the cost difference based on that feature alone. I do however, believe the cost difference to get the 48 MP camera is indeed worth it. I prefer taking all of my photos and videos in ProRAW and ProRes so that I am able to experience the full beauty of the cameras without all of the post processing that everyone seems to dislike with the iPhone 14.

plurry17 t1_ja2wf3s wrote

Get the 13/14 Pro's cuz they have 120hz

1

Kickmeiamadog t1_ja2zpcb wrote

Main differences are the cameras, 12mp vs 48mp main shooter and a 3X optical zoom, plus the screen is 120hz and AOD. My wife got the 14 plus and I got the 14pro; she takes good pictures but I can tell the improvement on mine. Main issue with the island is that it cuts into some video content whereas the notch only cuts in on full screen.

ribanez2009 t1_ja30rl4 wrote

Highly overrated. I'd rather it be gone. Bigger and more in the way

I have the 14 plus and by its the best iphone Ive ever had and I think dynamic island on the pros is just a gimmic really I mean you can still have live activities on lock screen and basically like the music function and what not is just a swipe away in the control center so for me i dont need to see whats on my screen while doing those things when they just take up more space and what I really dont like is when on phone calls and listening to music the dynamic island gets longer and takes up more than the notches on 13/14 models

justaroundthineriver t1_ja34ydp wrote

I have the 14PM and continue to forget about the dynamic island. Basically you could say I like the look more.

Fantastic-Store2495 t1_ja351b2 wrote

I have a regular 14. It’s a solid phone. It does all you need it to. I’ve never had a 120 Hz screen so I don’t miss it. The battery is very good and I only wish I had a slightly bigger screen. I think you’ll be just fine with a 14 plus and I don’t think it’s a bad deal. There might be small differences and some people would recommend the 13 or 14 Pro Max instead, etc. It’s a solid phone and you won’t regret it. If you can afford it, get it.

2

Smootie__ t1_ja3870c wrote

Would skip the 14 series altogether. The 15 plus is slated to have the dynamic island, forgoing the need to shell out extra to get it on the pro. Personally am waiting for full under screen tech to be advanced enough to either have a punch hole or 100% screen

2

Pvt-Snafu t1_ja3cavv wrote

In my opinion, dynamic island alone is not a reason to go for Pro version.

El_Dusty23 t1_ja3goly wrote

I am writing this using Apollo for Reddit, in that app you have some virtual pets running on the dynamic island, you can feed them and play with them, and that is the single thing I’ve noticed the DI doing… I don’t even remember to switch or pause songs there… honestly, not very useful so far

Independent_Gas_1557 t1_ja3qc90 wrote

I upgraded from 11 Pro to 14 Pro. Other than better cameras I can see no discernible difference. Video and screen look identical. Maybe it’s better but this human cannot tell. Dynamic island - don’t see a great use for it. Apple are running out of ideas for the phone.

TheDisheveledOneB974 t1_ja3wq2l wrote

I expected the Dynamic Island to be my favorite feature and generally it was the thing I was most excited about. My favorite part about it is when Maps navigation shows details like ".2 miles turn left". Other than that I forget it's there these days. Also, Apple has seemingly made ZERO effort to improve or expand upon it's functionality, 5 months in. I feel like there's a chance that the Dynamic Island will even just fade into obscurity soon.

The feature I expected would give me no use and the one I was least excited about turned out to be my favorite: All Hail The Always On Display 🙂 It might seem trivial or obvious, but this feature changed a lot about my relationship with my phone.

Hard to explain, and everyone has different use cases, but for me, always on display along with pro-motion are what make this phone feel different than my last phone.

FlaaffyPink t1_ja42v7n wrote

Agreed that ProMotion is more important. However, I do find the Dynamic Island to be useful. For example, I like to drive with my phone on a MagSafe mount and leave Spotify pulled up so I can browse playlists, but I use GPS a lot. Dynamic Island will show me the next turn I should make from Apple Maps and the distance so I don’t even have to leave Spotify.

deepakanandan t1_ja43kcy wrote

If you are ok with small size , I highly suggest iPhone 13 . Instead of iPhone 14, cause they are practically the same phone, same design, same hardware. You can easily get a new 13 for 2/3 price of iPhone 14. If you can go a bit higher I suggest you to go for iPhone 13 pro max , it has great battery , & 120 hz refresh rate....dynamic island is some thing which looks cool for few weeks , that's it

Goodnite15 t1_ja4r797 wrote

This is one of the biggest things I love about it, especially in the car driving switching from music or podcasts, to using maps GPS, having the dynamic island makes it so easy to switch through all of them while driving and go back and forth super quick and easy.

Also changing music or podcasts through dynamic island is awesome for staying in an app you need open, but you’re still able to change it through holding the island then letting go and it goes away. I personally like it, but other than that it’s unnecessary.

But there is a huge difference in the 14 Plus vs 14 PM in a lot of other things that’s not the dynamic island

isnt 13pm better than 14's? idk anyone who bought 14 ... they either upgraded to 14p/pm or 13pm. 14's just burn extra cash and are basically the same as 13p/pm

Ham_collector t1_ja5793a wrote

I personally would only go for the pro if you want better photos. Taking almost any photo at 2 or 3x zoom makes them look so much nicer

120hz display only matters if you already own other 120hz displays

Dynamic Island is a feature, not a game changer

And a pretty good battery on the pros

Freshlojic t1_ja57xss wrote

you’ll be missing the promotion and maybe higher brightness display outdoors instead, but that’s not a real factor. that promotion though is the big deal I recommend you get the 13 pro for at least

Dynamic Island is resumed in “potential”.

It has the “potential” to become more useful, powerful.

But right now it’s just like the notch, you won’t care about it anymore after a few days.

ColeBarsen t1_ja5lao3 wrote

The island is not a reason to upgrade to a Pro model phone. But, I think you’d find the ProMotion display, and improved cameras to be a worthy upgrade.

I don't think there is anything innovative about the Dynamic Island. In Android the notifications are powerful enough to show you all kinds of widgets pinned at the top. Apple just took a limited version of that and gave it a name.

1

SmokeyFrank t1_ja5zhcr wrote

I know I'm jumping into this mid-stream. I have an 8 Plus and will probably go 15 (Plus?) as my next phone. I'm guessing that Dynamic Island, whatever it is, isn't on my phone so it won't something I'll "miss". Happy with the phone as it is, I'm still a home button user.

It’s fun to have but I don’t really think about actively using it as much. If anything the Face ID animation is pretty ugly to me, but I’ve gotten used to it. The camera and pro-motion are a big deal breaker for me though. Also any bigger than the regular pro is too big for me personally.

+1. I sit in my driveway for 10 minutes before I leave just to pick music, then I set my GPS and leave it. I don’t even like having any GPS or screen on in the vehicle while it’s out of park. I use voice commands to send messages and skip songs. Once the vehicle is in motion, the phone goes down. So dangerous otherwise. All it takes is a moment for an accident to happen.
