It’s weird that people route all their communication through Facebook outside of the US.

Whatsapp got big outside the US since we do not have unlimited text like in the US. People really don't care if it owns by Facebook tho.

Exactly. WhatsApp is much more convenient than other services due to its universal adoption - especially when you're communicating with people coming from many nations.

Yup, how can you explain regular joe or grandma to use signal just because is more safe if is less popular, WhatsApp is simple and ready to use.

whatever alternative you prefer works. it's just nonsense to use imessage and essentially bully people into getting an iphone because of their text bubble's color or "breaking group chats" when yall can just use a cross platform app

iMessage sends plain text messages to anyone no matter what kind of phone they have. I don’t group chat.

Whatsapp was big outside USA before FB bought it. It was the default replacement for the extremely popular Blackberry Messenger, because WA was the only app that worked on all three smartphone platforms (Android, iPhone, and Blackberry). Once they’re in, there has never been a compelling reason to leave.

Forgot about that. Yes, it was also working for the five people who used Windows phones.
