Very possible that cable was the culprit, I mean mfi cables are telling when to stop charging and possible this couldn’t do it no more 🤷♂️

That’s not how this works. The phone tells the charger when to stop charging not the cable

Yeah what I meant is they communicating and possible the communication is poor not as in mfi certified ones

The phone will lower the wattage that it’s allowing „inside“ the battery. Either the charger does it or the phone will not charge anymore
So phone charges at 18w in the beginning wants to drop it down to 9w when almost full (80%). The charger either says „sure I can do that“ and provides the 9w or the charger doesn’t answer and the phone stops charging.
MFI is basically a seal of approval that it will 100% work as intended

Either way, that is an easy fix that I am just going to do proactively, I just usually kept the Apple cable at my desk so my phone can charge quicker, but I am going to move it next to my bed

I’ve never seen a bulge in that spot before. Is the screen still flat if you look at it from the side or is it protruding out?

Sorry I should have been clearer, the bulge is in the silicon protective case, like as if got hot and warped. That would be crazy if I had a bulge in the actual aluminum frame, I wouldn’t feel comfortable turning it on at that point.

Ah ok that makes more sense. Is there any discolouration or indication of excess heat on the phone or its buttons? If not, it could potentially be a case of a cheap case with low heat tolerance.
If you want to be sure, you could always try contacting Apple Support to run tests. It’s possible the battery could have issues. That’s the most likely thing that could cause an inordinate amount of heat.

You’re probably right. Don’t know which iOS 16 version It is but the iPhone now stops charging when it gets too hot so maybe check your battery stats to see if that was the case

That was a good idea. I took a look at it and I have honestly never paid attention to this, but it is very peculiar that the battery went to 0% about the time that I remember plugging it in and back up when I did the reboot
Edit: iOS 16.3.1 btw

IPhone 13 Pro, about 1.5 years old. I woke up this morning to an iPhone that was connected to the charger, but unresponsive. It was left on the charger from when I went to sleep (about 1am) until I woke up (about 6am) which is the charging routine that I have used with every phone that I have had. I was able to reboot the phone by following these steps:
Press and quickly release the volume up button.
Press and quickly release the volume down button.
Press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
After reboot, phone is behaving as expected, but then I noticed the bulge in the side of the case where the volume buttons are. It is quite pronounced and I am not sure if the pictures truly do justice to the amount of bulge. I am going to go out on a limb here and assume that the phone got extremely hot last night while charging and that’s why it was unresponsive this morning and the cause of the bulge? Has anyone had any experience with this or maybe can correct me if I am wrong? I am concerned that this is going to result in some sort of catastrophic failure. I charge via a third party cable and a usb adapter that is built in to my nightstand. I am going to change this immediately and use an apple cable/usb adapter, but could there be any other cause? Also, my Nintendo switch is on the same usb adapter and is completely normal this morning.
