I use a cross-platform cloud service.

There are a ton to choose from that will automatically sync photos – iCloud, Google Photos/Drive, OneDrive, … if you use Mac/Windows, or ownCloud/Nextcloud if you are technologically versed.

Usually Dropbox or Airdrop. Airdrop fails me sometimes (my phone won't 'see' my MacBook until I restart it; my Macs will see one another though), in which case I'll sometimes quickly text myself a file.

I am relatively new to apply products. I always drag the photo files to my iPhotos import section. Sometimes it takes hours for just a few photos. I can airdrop to myself ?!?

That’s what iCloud is for. Why the need for all the complicated solutions? iCloud is a synchronization service. It’s main purpose is to sync all your data, including photos, across all your devices.

As for photos, it does not alter (compress) the photos. The original, hi-res, images are stored in iCloud and can be downloaded to any device. The default setting is to store lower resolution versions on device to save storage space but as soon as you go to view them the higher res version is downloaded on demand. You can also choose to change the setting to always have the original hi-res version on devices as well with the caveat being that they will take up more space.

iPhoto, iCloud and Files all synced together. Nothing extra needs to be done, but if you are in a pinch just airdrop it.

Any modern Apple device can AirDrop to any other modern Apple device. That includes your own. If the devices are signed into the same Apple ID, they will also appear first in the AirDrop list of nearby devices, display their device icon, and won’t need confirmation to AirDrop.
