Extra phone Advice

In laws signed up for iPhone trade in for 2 iPhone 14 pro max.

Two boxes were sent -1 with their 2 iphone and another box is an extra with iPhone plug adapter. Outside label has their name - must be mistake of packager for someone else ?

Online Profile has no charge for the third phone and charger plug. Shipping tracking is one tracking ID.

Should I call T-Mobile to let them know they got an extra phone Or Can it be used by someone w T-Mobile ?

Keep the 3rd phone pristine in the box. If it’s no claimed after a certain period of time (depending on local laws) it’s theirs.

You are not obliged to tell them there was an extra phone send - but if they get in contact with you about it, you have to hand it over.

Even when they contact you, they have to prove you have it.

Yeah, but if they ask for it, they probably know the serial number or IMEI, and will mark it stolen, so it becomes essentially useless.

Curious, if that happens and the phone is otherwise new (not tied to any iCloud account for example), can it be used as an iPod essentially or does marking it stolen even prevent using it off of a cellular network?

Not trying to argue for keeping it or anything, just curious.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think it would still be able to be added to iCloud and used on WiFi, etc. It definitely could never be activated on a carrier again - that I do know from working at Verizon for awhile.

Also fwiw, according to an FTC link someone posted in another comment on this post, there’s no legal harm in keeping it. Sometimes the universe just hands you a present. Might as well accept it.

So 3 phones got sent? Make sure 100% you're not paying for the third one or it's not linked to an account and then I'd say use it unless you don't want to I'd even still keep it as back up. The only thing if the store think it's been stolen they might block it but other than that free phone 90% if the time they won't even check

Yeah in laws ordered two phones And 3 was sent. Not turned on yet - it’s likely someone else order mistakenly packaged w theirs since there’s the charger plugs included as an accessory item, but shipping label has their name and all w same shipping label as other box.

I dont know about your jursidiction but in Germany the shop would have full authority to get it back or demand payment.

Keeping it shouldn’t be a theft though, but again you probably don’t live in Germany so to be safe and “be the good guy” u should just call them.

Ofc you can also play risky and just put in a drawer and wait. But I wouldn’t recommend that obviously
