Just wondering how you guys set up your iPhone for use in the car (when CarPlay is not available).

I set (or would to set but don't know how):

  • screen lock to 'never'
  • set screen brightness to 80%
  • message notifications on (so that the message is automatically read out to me)
  • volume to 70%
  • run music app and choose shuffle of downloaded songs
  • run podcasts app and choose random podcast from downloaded podcasts
  • run google maps and start navigation to the next appointment in my calendar
  • send a message to my wife: "Just leaving now. My ETA is (whatever time the google/apple maps thinks is my ETA)"

My configuration is with the phone in portrait mode in a phone holder attached to the car's air vent, and with my AirPod Pros set to 'transparency'. [For some reason, I have to shout to get Siri to hear me, which is unfortunate.]

Just wondering what other settings you use when using your phone in the car. [how to achieve some or all of the above would also be appreciated as a bonus].

My pocket. I don’t use my phone in anyway whatsoever when driving. My car has wireless CarPlay now, so music plays from my phone, but it still stays in my pocket. Before CarPlay, it still stayed in my pocket. Whatever messages I get or “need” to send can wait until I’m not driving.

Very prudent. I wish I was as disciplined.

I’m only that way because I ride motorcycles. Vast majority of my close calls have been from people using their phones while driving. They’re so focused on their phones they’re only half assed focused on what’s going on around them. I hate people that use their phones while driving with a passion now (no offense) so now I refuse to be one of them. Stays in my pocket no matter what.

You're making me feel even more guilty ;) I too ride a motorcycle, and a bicycle. There are some places here in Bathurst where I just hope and pray the drivers are fully concentrating on their driving.

I think you've convinced me to put my phone also in my pocket when driving.

I just use the automatic driving focus and have music playing through the car I have a few contacts that can bypass the focus just in case

Thanks. It seems as if I may be over-complicating the whole thing.
