Xbox Game Pass is absolutely amazing on my iPhone and iPad. Basically playing console quality games with crazy graphics on my phone is mind blowing. Wish I was a kid again to experience this kind of thing when I had the time for it.

It still uses Safari but it creates its own icon for your Home Screen. Not exactly as good as a stand alone app, but way better than opening safari then a book mark

That’ll be great, can’t wait to use them on all my iOS emulators from the App Store.

No, what you do need is a subscription to Xbox Gamepass, which is their video game streaming service and includes Xbox Cloud Gaming (technically still in public beta I believe). You’ll be limited to the games available to stream on the service but “limited” isn’t the right word. There are tons of great games that live on Gamepass and even more that cycle through from time to time. That include all Xbox studios first party games, EA Play, and a bunch of great games. You can check out the full list of available games on the Xbox site or by downloading the Gamepass app for IOS. But to answer your question in a long winded way, no you don’t need an Xbox.

Now how about an emulator that’s worth a damn like Provenance?

Yeah but why would you use a classic Nintendo controller to play an up to date Xbox game that most likely wouldn’t have all the required buttons anyway.

I just got burned by stadia because google is effin’ shutting down the service in Jan.

I’m very interested in GamePass to play games not available on the Switch or iPhone natively.

Is GP like Stadia with streamed games to macs and devices? Is it a monthly fee or do you buy the games outright? How’s the lag and video compression fidelity?

I’m really hoping I can find something the Stadia void left.

For Macs, I just want to plug Open Emu. That app has treated me well. It comes with many cores you can download and the cataloging is like iTunes: you choose your emulator on the left and your games appear on the right as box art, a list, etc.

Gears of War is a first party Microsoft series so the entire series is available on Gamepass! But I’m not sure if they are all available for cloud gaming so you’ll want to double check that part.

Edit: I just did a quick search and it looks like all the gears of war games (and all the Gamepass games) are playable with cloud gaming.

The first party Microsoft games (Halo, Gears of War, Forza, most of the Bethesda games like Fallout, Skyrim etc.) are there to stay and don’t cycle out. Other third party games are announced and remain on the service for at least a few months or longer. And these games span from indies to AAA blockbusters like Assassins Creed, Red Dead Redemption 2, etc.

When they cycle out they will announce it under a “leaving soon” message and you will lose access just like Netflix in your example. The silver lining is that usually when one of those games is slated to be removed, they offer a discount (I think 20% or so) for Gamepass subscribers to purchase the game.

GP can be used to stream games to your other (non-Xbox) devices using Xbox Cloud Gaming. It’s a monthly fee, and sorry but I only tested it out briefly when it was first launched so I can’t speak to the lag an video compression fidelity. I do know that Microsoft put a lot of $ into ensuring you could use cloud gaming without top of the line internet speeds. I’ve heard that you may notice a slight delay for competitive online games like FPS but won’t notice much of a difference for single player games.

Yes and no. If you're trying to move data from many devices through a router, a faster connection gets the data through faster and allows the next set of packets to be sent. The latency increases when there router can't complete a request fast enough to respond to the other device.

To out it another way, 5 people are standing around. 3 people (Person A B and C) are handing items to 1 person (Person Y) who is handing them to the next (Person Z). The longer it takes for person Y to hand Person As things to person Z, the longer B and C have to wait. That is their latency.

A faster router cuts latency, and a bigger pipe also reduces latency.

Glad I could help! I still remember the feeling of playing gears of war for the first time and being blown away so enjoy! Great games. Microsoft is also reportedly working on streaming devices that use cloud gaming as a cheaper alternative to Xbox consoles.

GP is everything Stadia was except done better. If you have an Xbox or pc, it downloads to the console. You pay a monthly fee. If the game gets cycled out, you get a coupon to buy the game at a discount to own it.

I played Gears of War 5 on my iPhone and had amazing video fidelity. It depends on your connection and there can definitely be lag but it’s really good overall.

Thanks! I actually specifically only want to stream games to my Mac, basically just a few AAA games I can’t get on my Switch. But my connection is good and I might check it out.
