Curious if somehow MagSafe charging is smarter and does something to prevent even needing to stop charging to avoid overheating?

To an extent yes. 3rd party outside of I believe belkin are limited to 7.5 watt. The Apple MagSafe can do 15w but can also intelligently adjust wattage like when using lightning.

That said MagSafe get hot also. That’s the nature of wireless charging.
