Always love a good app rec, especially when I’ve got some iTunes gift cards to burn through. Not a huge gamer, but not opposed. Also, if you’ve subscribed to app I’d be curious which one and why.

I don't get the Apollo hype. They layout is actually worse than the regular Reddit app imo
That’s up to personal preference for sure, I found the official Reddit app to get more and more worse when it comes to layout as time went on. Not to mention viewing media (as in videos) is really wonky in the official app as of my experiences, especially as someone who commonly saves posts a lot. I like the gesture based upvotes and replying too, reduced a lot of screen clutter. Also it hides comments of people you blocked instead of it showing “[Blocked User]” all the time allowing you to see their text anyway, kind of defeating the purpose of the block feature. Especially when you use it to block nasty bigots.
Only thing I wish Apollo had which it doesn’t, is Drafts. I have not replied to some people because I typed a whole comment only for the app to close or something else and while it can recover the text.. sometimes it hard to ever find posts again.
I'll give you the video portion. That's awful on the default Reddit app. I still paid for Apollo so I can support small devs
I suppose for someone who uses Reddit a lot, it probably makes the experience better. I personally can't stand scrolling on my phone and seeing all these repetitive ads, and I know Apollo would get rid of the ads, but like you, I'm not a fan of the layout, so I stick with the regular app and deal with stupid ads.
That’s crazy man I can’t stand that garbage Reddit app. Apollo beats it by miles with an engaged developer consistently and constantly trying to enhance it.
You can personalize the layout.
Personally, the only thing the Official Reddit app is good for is Chat or opening reddit links from outside Apollo when I'm way down the queue and don't want to lose my place.
And if Apollo gets chat functionally, the only time I'll be opening the official app is from external apps when this shit site refuses to let me see more comments it in browser
You know you Can open straight from browser to Apollo right?
I know. But I don't want to potentially lose my place where ever I am. Most times, I just leave Apollo open, but sometimes I need an answer to a question and I don't always expect it to be on reddit.
You can just swipe backwards and it will return you.
This never work for me. It always opens in the default app. What am I missing? I follow the instruction video located in Apollo settings.
Yeah I couldn’t get into it, Narwhal is much more natural for me
Also Amplosion from the same creator as Apollo. It bypasses amp from Google search results. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made, costs $2 I believe.
Please eli5 what this means
You're forcing links to open the right url and not the amp link from Google
I still dont understand but i think Ill buy it
When you open a link through google, it loads the page through their servers.
It’s supposed to speed up the experience, but what it actually does is fill the page with google ads, and google tracking.
Amplosion prevents safari from opening the google served page and instead opens the original.
It also makes links suck when you try to share something
I’m not sure if Google still does this but when you do a Google search and open one of the results it’ll open a different version of the page that says amp on top and messes up the layout of the page.
I seem to be one of the few people that actually prefers the regular Reddit but the ads kill it. Not gonna pay like a tenner a month for no ads. That's why I am "stuck" with Apollo. Paying for Ultra though.
Why pay for it though? The free version of Apollo works great. The only thing I'm missing is notifications, but I keep the regular Reddit app installed for those.
Because of the notifications. Kinda liking the idea of using both apps like that, I will do that haha
You pay for apollo?
Apollo puts the basic and free corner stone feature of reddit, which is posting threads, behind a paywall.
I imagine that the vast majority of Apollo users paid for the app just to use reddit like it's intended.
I paid for the app because it's the cheapest, best looking alternative to get rid of ads. Also, I didn't want this new reddit UX, it's absolute shit (old.reddit.com redirect
browser extension is second after ublock Origins on any new computer), but sometimes, I need to see the profile bio to get the information I need and Apollo doesn't support that (yet?).
In fact, if I didn't absolutely need the new features on occasion, I wouldn't have even downloaded the app, but people keep messaging me on the chat or the aforementioned profile bio (which, to remind you, are both, effectively, products of the new UX (chat may be a little older)).
Do you mean posting to subreddits in general or leaving comments is blocked on Apollo's free tier? I only started paying premium for the notifications and hadn't noticed anything missing from free Apollo.
Commenting is included in the free tier. It’s posting new topics that’s behind the paid version.

> I imagine that the vast majority of Apollo users paid for the app just to use reddit like it's intended.
Most users of freemium apps NEVER pay a cent for the app, even after using it for years.
It's rare to see a majority of paying users. So... vast majority? I think it's easier for me to be crowned the next UK emperor, or czar, or whatever it's called.

Apollo has free, premium and ultra, premium is a one time fee for additional features, ultra is a subscription for even more features. If you use Reddit Apollo Premium is excellent.
Genuinely asking: why is Apollo app considered better? I thought it was a wrapper around Reddit
> I thought it was a wrapper around Reddit
Oh not at all. I don't know what it's called, the standard UI/UX for iOS apps like WhatsApp, Settings, and others, but Apollo uses the same UI/UX principles to make browsing reddit seem very very famliar on a mobile interface. Think of it like if Apple ever made a reddit client, it would look almost exactly like Apollo.
There's too many customizable features to say it looks as if it was made by Apple
lmaoo
It uses platform native UI. Instead of whatever that shit Reddit threw together.
It’s also got a much better text editor for adding formatting to comments.
It’s also much faster.
The only thing the official app does better is they have a few exclusive features that developers don’t have access to.
Like the instant messaging, Sign in with Apple, etc…
But it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.
It also doesn't have that stupid button that takes you to the bottom of the post. Sometimes for some reason it's way too high and I end up being dragged to the bottom.. lol
No ads and a better media viewer
Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic is $5. I don't play it often but it's nice to have on a flight. Used to spend hours playing RCT2 as a kid and Classic is about as perfect of a port of 1 & 2 as you can get
Things 3
I tried Things 3 but the Widget Update issues and iPad + Mac Pricing and the fact that Things 4 may come in the next months made me refund it. I‘ll try Things 4 when it comes out. Also, you can‘t use it on Linux/Windows or non iPhone/iPad/Mac devices.
You were downvoted but all those are valid criticisms. It’s already $10 for the iPhone version then you gotta pay an extra $70 to have it on all your other devices. Also, exclusive to the Apple ecosystem but many of us still use Windows/Linux for work. It’s a great app but it does have its downsides.
Exactly, thanks for commenting.
Is Things 4 due out soon?
Not official, but if we look at the release times between versions 1, 2 and 3 thy all took 4-5 years, which means that things 4 should be released in the next months.
A privacy nightmare.
How so?
GoodNotes 5. Awesome app for taking notes and it auto saves into you’re favorite cloud service. If anyone has experience with any other note taking apps that work similarly let me know.
I use notability. Also auto backups to iCloud or one drive or wherever
I use GoodNotes for college and it’s great. There are some downsides but it’s pretty good.
Isn’t it infinitely faster to type in notes on a keyboard, though?
Sure but I don’t always have a desk to sit at for using a keyboard. Also, you can upload a pdf into GoodNotes and write on it where a keyboard isn’t useful there. I am an engineer so I am always redlining drawings or reports or making sketches or just making extra comments to clear things up as parts get built. My drawings get uploaded in real time and my team gets them instantly. For personal notes, I make a lot of sketches so being able to draw with the Apple Pencil is great.
How is it better than Apple notes?
You can sketch and draw over any pdf you upload into it. If you’re a student you can upload a book or a professors slides and take notes over it with an Apple Pencil. I upload drawings or reports and redline them using my iPad and I get the notes back at my desk instantly or I can share them to my team using any cloud service. I’ve only used the basic apple notes app for quick notes here and there where I just need to type.
When you sketch on a PDF, does it flatten automatically when you open on the computer? Looking for something for the iPad that doesn’t so I can edit the markups later when I bring it to my PC.
I know Notablilty doesn’t but Bluebeam does, though their app is super clunky to use
Unfortunately it does So yeah it is hard to edit the comments later in without an ipad/iPhone.
I prefer Notability. Being able to record while taking notes is a huge feature for me.
I haven’t used that one but I’ll check it out. Although I wouldn’t use recording very much.
I'm a student so I use the recording function to record lectures. It's a legitimately useful feature for me.
Carrot Weather. Homicidal weather forecasts.
Would you say Carrot is still worth it with Apple improving their weather app?
if you care more about weather than the average person, 100%. the iOS 16 weather app gives more than enough information for most people. CARROT has a lot more customization and personality, and if you don't want to pay for Ultra you can use a nice free radar app like MyRadar for your radar needs (if you live in the US or Australia)
Kind of wanna move to Carrot weather just cause of their live activity that can show up on the dynamic island. Still not sure if Apple weather is better tho.
Their apple watch app is very good
No it's not. It's awful lol, use AccuWeather
accuweather isn't anything special either.
Miles ahead of the stock app
Not a user of it, but I’d say absolutely not. Dark Sky was awesome and apple’s now integrated that.
apple have dark sky now and its gonna be in the default weather app for free, also, paying for widgets 😹😹
Just adding my 2¢. Dark Sky has never been accurate for my area, so I like being able to use other sources. Plus, I personally don’t like Apple/Dark Sky’s radar.
I moved away from it, i mostly like the mystery location game
Soo:
Spark stores your emails on their servers like many other email apps.
I know and ok with that. Couldn’t find anything visually better and simpler except superhuman (30$\month).
Totally fine that’s your choice. I put that there in case someone didn’t know.
What is the best e-mail client then on iOS?
Outlook
I've used Edison mail since forever. On IOS it's called Email - Edison Mail. I use it for 5 different emails and love it. Never had any problems.
They're pretty serious about privacy and specifically state that all emails are fetched from your phone and stored on your device directly.
use GPG encryption then
You should read their privacy policy
Did you actually read their privacy policy? They will hold on to your email only temporarily when you use “send later” feature - for obvious reasons.
Never heard of email client using own servers to hold users emails, it doesn’t make sense, server space is not free and they already have access to all your emails.
[removed]
I can't go into every other website in the world and force them to send me GPG-encrypted emails. The emails are going to arrive unencrypted.
You could use a provider that stores your emails encrypted. But when the app requests the emails using IMAP, they're coming unencrypted, otherwise the email app wouldn't be able to read it and show it to you.
If the email app gets them unencrypted... it was all for nothing. So how does it solve the problem mentioned?
> Adguard
Firefox Focus seems to do the job for me.
I couldn't find any twitter app called Fenix.
Here you go: https://apps.apple.com/ua/app/fenix-for-twitter/id1437821840
And update here. Two days as I am using the Spring app (one time payment). Well , it’s the best client for me now in every way.
How does Adguard work and where am does it work?
I’m using Safari browser. It works like an extension
Tweetbot for sure. Best twitter client I’ve ever used.
What do you like about it? Never bothered to use it as the twitter app seems..fine?
Not the person you were responding to, but thought I would chip in, if it’s alright.
Been using Tweetbot for the past few years, for a few reasons.
No ads. Less tracking from the app itself. And I’ve noticed way less battery drain compared to the official app.
Now, I much prefer the look of the official app. Tweetbot isn’t the slickest looking app. But I can look past that for a simple, clean user experience that doesn’t bombard me with ads or suck my battery dry.
Plus, it’s $6 a year to support the devs, so that’s not too bad, IMHO.
I’ve been using Tweetbot for years. It doesn’t have ads or promoted / suggested tweets in your timeline. It just shows the tweets of who you follow in chronological order, which is what I want, whereas I just opened the Twitter app and the first tweet is from 17 hours ago followed by a COD ad a tweet from 5 minutes ago and then a tweet from Elon musk, who I don’t follow, then tweet from someone I follow and then another ad. https://imgur.com/a/dBem1xd
you know you can change it so your timeline shows you latest tweets from only the people you follow with no suggested tweets right?
The problems with the twitter app:
Shame they moved to a subscription model.
Overcast
Sometimes it is stuck on loading for me
Apollo, the best Reddit client
Not sure if links are allowed but if not in a rush to buy apps, this might help you save a few bucks on them. Or at least see what prices they have been. https://appsliced.co/
I’ve been disappointed a few times at how much I paid to find it was a lot cheaper.
On that note, Monopoly and that devs games are great! Marmalade I believe.
1Password.
I’d be lost without it. One of the most useful apps on my phone for sure.
Procreate
Reeder. Pocket Casts, but I got it pre-subscription. Wipr.
Apollo and CARROT
Nightsky+
I have Sky Guide which is similar and also paid and by far my favorite paid app ever
Noir - one-time paymant, dark mode for safari
For me it’s Procreate Pocket
My all time killer application is Due. I never miss anything I need to do and frees my mind of clutter
Do you get annoying alarms that keep on ringing until you disable them? Standard iPhone notifications app just beeps once and I never pay any attention to it. And does it have location based alarms?
Actually I don’t, but I’m a bit fastidious. I own the desktop application too which helps organize and remind me when to leave and what to take kind of thing. Lots of different applications out there, but I’ve found this one to be the brain dump stuff so I can enjoy life and not have to keep all the little details in my head.
LoseIt for calorie tracking and weight loss tracking.
KeePassium
Procreate because it's a great app to draw on
Paprika 3 for managing recipes. It can automatically download from most websites, and with scan to text features in newer iPhones it’s easy to get text from books in. One license for iPhone and iPad, separate for MacOS.
My all time favourite app everrrrr!!!
I just like spicing up my photos and videos.
I got burned by VSCO removing the free tools, so I went with this one.
GTA Vice City
MacroFactor. The best macros app on the market. Much better than My Fitness Pal.

BaconReader pro for Reddit - something I used to use on Android that I bought for my iPhone when I switched over as I’m used to it.
Unified Remote (iAP purchase to full) - another Android app I used to use to remote control computers with my phones touchscreen using the unified remote server. Great for HTPC setups.
Vinegar extension for Safari - found out about this on this subreddit. Used to use NewPipe on Android for listening to YouTube videos in the background and after seeing all the praise that Vinegar got on this sub, bought it for my iPhone and iPad to do exactly that with it. Blocks ads, enables seamless background playback so it’s a perfect replacement for my old NewPipe usage.
FL Studio Mobile - GarageBand is great but I simply prefer the way Fruity Loops Studio Mobole works on iOS and iPad Os. The fact that Image Line let you use any sound packs bought on Windows and Android across all devices is great too.
Slow Shutter - for long exposure shots
Does it actually work well?
Calzy as a permanent replacement for the default calculator
Money Manager. Budget/Expenses tracking (Has a free version).
Paprika. Recipe manager
Fantastical. Calendar app. I don’t use the subscription model. Paid for it when it was a purchase model.
And as many have said, Apollo. I don’t know if it’s still offered but I did the lifetime purchase. Think it was around $20-30.
Does money manager export data from credit cards too or just debit
I’m not too sure what you mean. I don’t know if it does or has the capabilities to do what apps like Mint do with automatically getting expense data. I do everything manually. Whether I use my debit or credit card I just have accounts for each of them.

Apollo obviously.

BitWarden is the best Password Manager as well but it’s free.
Paprika 3
You know when you go to find a recipe, and the website is littered with ads, as you scroll the page jumps around, so annoying! With Paprika you use the share button to import the recipe into a much easier to read and use format! Plus it allows you to store and rate the recipes, as well as have a inventory of your pantry, and even make shopping lists!
It’s hands down my favourite app I have ever spent money on!
Carmageddon
Without a doubt r/Widgy
I don’t use many paid apps but my favourites are Pixelmator Photo, Tweetbot and Macro which is a camera app and Calcbot.
Monefy Pro. Very easy to track spendings

Off topic question, but are itune gift cards still a thing? I just returned to the wall garden and assumed that apple's "Apple gift card" encompassed everything.
Yeah Apple gift card can be used in App Store

Parcel. Cheap yearly subscription (like $3 per year if I recall), and you get an all in one parcel tracking app.
It supports pretty much every shipping company imaginable.
It even has Amazon integration and auto adds all your Amazon packages.
I have it but for some reason it doesn’t update Amazon tracking. Like I have to go into the app and refresh and it’ll eventually notify me about updates long after my package has arrived
It takes a few hours for me after I place an order. But it eventually shows up.
Lumafusion, worth every penny but I might have to upgrade it once Davinci Resolve comes out for iPad
Calm. It keeps me sane.

Procreate: Perfect for drawing
YNAB
Fitbod. Been good at tracking exercise
Athlytic is my go-to for fitness recovery (think of Whoop for Apple Watch)
Procreate is it for me. Amazing app to draw or scribble on. Got many hours just drawing and keeping myself preoccupied while working at home. It’s just one those many jewels I’m glad I have found.
Idle Acorns, I think I paid $3 for it. It’s a fun little incremental idle game that I like to check up on a couple of times per day.
Those ad free 3rd party apps of my most used social media apps such as twitter and Reddit
Speech Central. It’s a text-to-speech app. And it’s actually free, but has a £6.99 one-time upgrade.
I’m someone who uses the accessibility screen reader a lot so that I can “read” things while I’m walking. But this app just makes the whole experience so much better.
My primary use case for it is reading webnovels. They’re published online, usually one chapter per webpage. So what I do is write my own web scraper to extract the novel into a text document that I convert into an .epub and import it into this app. Suddenly I’ve got a full audiobook, and the best thing is I don’t have to tap next page and restart the screen reader every chapter.

Soro - customised shortcuts for Sonos speakers. Essential if you want to create macro commands for your speakers, or automate them.
Microsoft Wordament…wasn’t sure if it was mentioned. Great word dame worth the $10 a year!
Accounts Tracker Pro. Fab money management tool. Even syncs across users.
Spotify premium. It’s my music center.
Notebooks App (App Store). It is super underrated. It’s a note taking app with some nice polish and, most importantly, just text files. No proprietary formats and future proof. Syncs with iCloud or Dropbox or generic WebDAV. The latter makes it idea for self hosting too.
I don’t understand why it’s not more popular!
Apollo. Overcast. Endel. Things. Rise sleep. Scrivener. Zones. Drafts. Plant Identify. Nightsky. Various adblockers.
I’ve subscribed to Daylio, Endel, and Plant Identify. Daylio may have saved my life. Endel is just very fucking cool. Plant identify is fun for finding which plants are weeds before they grow too big, and also fun for identifying random things outside.
Apollo and Overcast are my go tos. I also pay the Apple Music subscription but I don't know if that counts.
/r/MarvisApp. Pro mode for Apple Music. Customize metadata in lists (playlist, album list) and mini player/full screen player; also, smart rules to whittle down lists. So basically what you do is, you make a section for all the songs in your library (boring) and then you use rules to make a smart playlist that changes dynamically.
$8 USD, one time fee (also has a $5 Last.fm add-on, but I don't need/use it).
I’m a Linux user so I use three apps that I must have to interact with my computers. Flacbox, SimpleNote, and Enpass.
I don’t recommend to anyone to subscribe to anything, Why? Because is a waste of money supporting greedy companies which made $T of money from fee’s.
If you really want to support devs by the product or service directly avoiding the middle man who take 30 percentages just by being clever to addict the user in his golden cage. Think yourself what you own when you pay for subscriptions?
