I understand that coming from an iPhone 11/12/13 it would feel a little underwhelming to see how the base 14 is but there seems to be so much hate towards it from tech reviewers. In Canada it's a $300 jump from 14 to 14pro and that's no small change for everyone buying an already expensive phone.

My last iPhone was a 4 and currently on a Samsung S8 (2017 release). I only see comparisons to the most recent models and nobody talks about how the phone might be a huge upgrade for someone coming from a phone 5 years old.

Some thoughts from those who switched from a much older phone to the 14 base model?

I don’t see any hate for it. Really, I don’t see any mention of it at all.

Most YouTube vids I've seen covering it aren't speaking highly of it and calling it a reboxed 13 and alot of comments say get a refurbished 13 or wait for the 15... Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places

If you are coming from the phones you Say there won’t be an issue.

The poor reviews are because this is the first iPhone release that uses last years chips. That’s why it’s a “repackaged 13”. They made minor improvements to the iPhone 13 and are selling it for full price. It’s more economical to get a 13 than a base 14 given the specs (minus a couple gpu cores) being identical.

No one is complaining it’s a bad phone, just makes more sense to buy a 13 at a discounted price.

If you are considering the base or plus 14. The 13 pro/max are the better buys. And what everyone who bought the base 14 should have bought.

I mean, is that not precisely what it is? I'm sure it's still a great phone, but the 13 is $100 cheaper for basically the exact same hardware.

There’s hate for it because it’s basically just a renamed iPhone 13. Same a15 chip, and some other pretty minor extras. You might be better off saving some money and getting an iPhone 13 or 13 pro if you can find one.

It’s a waste of resources as it offers such minor tweaks it doesn’t even deserve to exist. The iPhone 13 is almost the same exact phone and you can get that on sale. Only the 14 Plus is a bit more exciting for being huge and having amazing battery life.

The base 14 seems to exist only to upsell the Pro model.

It's like saying there's nothing wrong for companies to release the same product every year because people who have older devices will still like it..makes no sense:/

Because apple charges an arm and a leg and is using last year's chip. This is the first time that they have done this. Nobody is saying it is a bad phone, but the 13 pro/max seem to be a better option since they have the same chipset but have better camera/screen compared to the 14.

For the most part I agree with everyone else. But I'll be getting the 14 and I'm still satisfied with that decision. We don't upgrade every year, we use our phones until they crap out, and since my husband is required to have the security updates it's worthwhile to get the newest phone to have the longest possibility for updates. Here it's an extra 250 to get the pro, which for both of us would be an extra 500, so it still feels like the regular 14 is a good choice for us.

Same! Phone lasts 4-5 years usually so it will be a big difference. Agreed with the latest phone having a bit more longevity for updates aswell. I understand everyone's comments though and it's an interesting conversation
