Moving over from S21 ultra to iPhone 14 pro max.

You're probably fed up with seeing posts like these, so I'll keep this short and sweet and offer my thanks for any help upfront.

So having never used an iPhone besides a quick glance and mess around with my kids iPhones.

I've decided to give the 14 a go after basically being a Android user from the S2 days..

I've never really used to much or taken to much advantage of the customising options using the stock apps etc

Only app I have really become dependent on is

Bitwarden to remember all my passwords. Infinity for Reddit and lichess.

Not sure if you have a YouTube version of Revanced which is an absolute godsend and the creators of that app need to be Knighted and gives the freedom of whatever city's they roam!!

Can you guys give me a list of the most useful apps I should check out on the iPhone store ?

Also do I have to ditch my Google account and sign up to an iPhone account with a new email etc?

One last thing can you give me a starts guide to purchasing new ear phones and a smart watch do they have to be iPhone branded or is it just Samsung products you just can't use anymore?

  • bitwarden exists for iOS, although I do not know how it compares to android.

  • Apple does not allow programs like Vanced. Ad-blocking apps can sometimes block YouTube ads, though.

  • You can continue to use your google email address, although I’d recommend that you create a free iCloud account (for your Apple ID) just so that google tracks you less.

  • Google has apps available in the App Store (e.g., gmail, maps, photos, sheets, voice, drive, etc.). Again, I don’t know how they compare to android, but they exist.

  • Reddit apps are different. One of the best ones for iOS is Apollo, but it’s a paid app. Reddit has a free one, but it’s not that good.

  • If you have insomnia and want to read more than you’ve ever wanted to read about iOS vs android, both pros and cons, search this sub for “android” and then sort by “new”.

I switched from S22U to 14PM and don’t regret it at all. This is my first ever iPhone. My previous phones were all Galaxy phones starting from S7 edge. To answer your questions:

  1. Bitwarden exists on the iOS App store. I did not notice much difference between iOS version and android’s version. You can use your existing email and master password to login and gain access to all your passwords that you synced on android. I’d say using bitwarden on apple keyboard is much easier than on samsung’s keyboard.
  2. No YouTube vanced on iOS. You can download Adblock Pro and use YouTube ad free using Safari browser. I do the same. I’d suggest using Vinegar safari extension for YouTube.
  3. All google apps are available for free on the App store. Not sure what apps you’re looking for. Apps that are useful to others may not be useful to you and wise versa.
  4. You should create an Apple ID. I created it using my gmail ID. I continue to you my gmail ID for emails. Haven’t created an icloud ID and is not needed.
  5. Airpods Pro 2 (better than Galaxy Buds Pro) and Apple Watch Series 8 or SE (much better than galaxy watch) in terms of of seem less connection and how fluid the UI is. Galaxy buds Pro will work on iPhone but you won’t be able to adjust the settings like you can on Samsung phones. I believe Galaxy buds plus and buds can be connected using the Galaxy wearable app on iOS. I’m not certain how Galaxy watch works when connected to an iPhone. Haven’t tried it.

I can chime in about the Google apps part. They are comparable to their Android counterparts for the most part. All work most really good. Only app that has some issue is Google Home but refreshing the app will get it working. I was a long term Android user with a lot of Google services and the switch to iOS was actually pretty easy and I am using all my Google apps fine as if I were still on Android.

For contacts, email, calendar…

The native iOS apps work well with gmail accounts. Contacts with gmail accounts have slightly reduced functionality.

Google’s own apps for mail and calendar exist and work well enough.

Bitwarden …

It works quite well with all the apps, including Safari, bank apps,food and take out apps, etc.

Vanced…

Does not work. You will have to buy a YouTube premium subscription. You can get around it by using a Safari extension such as Vinegar. Vinegar will let you play YouTube videos in the background and so on.

Apollo for Reddit is the GOAT. Don’t bother with any other Reddit client, including the official one.

Earphones and smart watches …

They will work with an iPhone. But in less than 6 months, you’ll want to switch to completely to the “ecosystem” because they “just work” with each other.

Pretty much all the other apps you see or know off work quite well.

I can say you don't have to ditch your Google account. In fact, that's a point of frustration for Android users that some Google apps look and run better on iOS.
I believe when iOS finely rolled out widgets Google actually updated their search widget and Android users were like WTH!?

Best Reddit app is Apollo in my opinion. I was an avid RedditIsFun user but Apollo is even better.

Best wireless earbud, I would recommend the Sony one over the AirPod Pro. Beside the best noise cancellation + great sound quality that Sony earbud offer, the AirPod Pro/AirPod Max is reported to had their noise cancellation nerfed significantly over the time.

I have seen AirPod pro users saying that repeated in this sub and r/Apple as well as journalist (The verge I believe)

Musi is the best alternative i found for vanced, you sometimes have ads but you can listen in background and with your screen turned off.

I only use my Gmail account really so I can use playstore (obviously)

So even if I did just make a apple email account it shouldn't be to much effort to change my email address on whatever websites/apps etc I use it for.

I'm sure I have OCD as it would drive me mad having more than one email account to remember and the fact iPhones are uniformed with style( app icons) etc really appeals to me

Only upgraded a few days ago so won't receive the phone till the 26th of this month so the wait is going to kill me I'm a child in a grown adults body 🤦

Others have already provided the majority of answers so I'll add something different. As someone who just made the jump after a decade of Android, be prepared to adjust your habits. Some things you do can transfer over from Android but others will not and the initial frustration and buyers remorse is very real.

I was ready to return the device after 2 days of use simply because of the adjustment period and how much things were annoying me, simply because I was trying to do them the Android way. You will most likely encounter things that always annoy you, there's just no way around it.

For YouTube, there is always using an invidious or piped instance

Otherwise you can sideload with AltStore- unfortunately, the number of sideloaded apps you can have on a device is limited.

For apps outside of App Store you need to install a certificate and a third party shop, the problem is that you need to pay, I was using Signulous but in the end I was just using it for YouTube so it wasn’t worth it. I was also concerned about security so overall I wouldn’t recommend.

You will miss file manager from android and some customization options, you will gain fluidity of the system and security.

For Bitwarden, do you take time to enter all the passwords one by one? I just got the app and have so many accounts, it’s taking me forever to enter all the info yet alone remember the accounts I have

When you enter the password for the first time Bitwarden asks if you want to save it, then next time you need to put the password in enters your username/email address etc along with your password

Hmm I see. I’m referring to the actual process of getting all my account info into Bitwarden. I know there are ways to transfer from other apps but I have never used a password holder before. So I’m wondering if I need to be manually inputting each account user/pass into the Bitwarden vault manually?

I’d stay with android if I were you. A lot of what you do, especially torrenting, you can’t do on iOS. Same goes with YouTube revanced, there’s nothing equivalent unless you side load apps and you have to pay apple a yearly fee of $100 or something like that. Complete rip off.

If you really want a new phone just go for the 22U or better yet wait for the 23U or go for one of the foldable 4 series. Also the Pixel 7 Pro looks pretty sweet too.

Use an adblocker and watch YouTube using safari. You can even add a shortcut to your Home Screen and it even adds a YouTube icon. Just opens up in safari rather than the app

So a quick update, my iPhone 14 pro max turned up about a week after ordering it which was pretty quick considering.

Thoughts so far after a few days messing around with it.

The apps seem to be far more well designed, using BitWarden to log into apps on my S21 was a pain on times with this phone I click on the log in screen it scans my face and everything is filled in I only have to press enter and I’m all logged in seems far quicker and sleek.

I like the keyboard minimal looking but very nice to look at and I don’t seem to make as many typing mistakes so far anyway.

The Apollo Reddit app my god it’s amazing.

Face ID seems to work flawlessly, thought I’d miss the fingerprint sensor but not so far at least.

The ability to delete every app (so far at least) is great nothing more annoying than being stuck with preloaded apps that you will never use and can’t delete.

Camera is better than on my S21 ultra.

I know there’s no need really as I can keep my google email etc but I’m slowly changing websites that have my google email to the new Apple email I’ve now got

FaceTime the quality on the video calls is amazing far better than WhatsApp or messenger.

Talking off WhatsApp, I might be imagining this but if I get a WhatsApp voice message off someone who has a iPhone the voice recording seems to be better?

The mobile signal where I live is a lot better I can actually use mobile data indoors now where as I had to be connected to the Wi-Fi to receive calls use the internet on the S21

The only really annoying thing I’ve come across is not being able to order all my apps into alphabetical order on the Home Screen

Anyway I’m off into town now to sell my S21 and put the money to an Apple Watch 😂
