Found a tiny black speck on my iPhone 13 Pro Max’s screen. It hasn’t been dropped or anything and is still under warranty. If it’s a dead pixel, will the warranty cover this?

A screen replacement on an ipad is not as simple as a screen replacement on a phone. You do have the cloud that downloads your old data for you on your replacement. It sucks, right? This is the experience Apple wants you to have. One where you don't actually own your apple products/data, but instead youre leasing it from them. Their devices are intentionally engineered to not make a lot of repairs simple, but to be expensive enough to make upgrading a more desireable choice. This is how they hold you hostage.

You didn't mention an ipad that had a display issue and it being a unit replacement? Sorry I must have responded to the wrong person

Turn the monitor on and off and give the screen a fair sturdy rub in that area. It may not be dead - might just be stuck.

Shop won't swap it or fix it if it's just 1 pixel. That's deemed as acceptable! (Ridiculous!)

Wow. Imagine the embarrassment if you’d actually gone into an Apple Store to ask for a replacement

SeanAmongTheFence t1_itc9b18 wrote

I used to have one of those thick screen protectors that had cracked in a bunch of spots so I went to the store I bought it at to use my warranty and get a new iPhone. Well the service guys looks at my phone and peels the screen protector off revealing a completely fine unbroken screen without a scratch on it. I was super embarrassed.

10

gravis86 t1_itcuoh2 wrote

Well embarrassment aside, at least they saved you from buying a new phone!

2

Jozex21 t1_it9zwpn wrote

put another one right now though

carloandreaguilar t1_itbzj3y wrote

Nah, I haven’t had a screen protector ever in my 13 pro and zero micro scratches whatsoever

1

JacoBee93 t1_itc0hw1 wrote

Yeah that’s not really possible :)

Also it’s not for scratches, it’s for cracks

2

carloandreaguilar t1_itc0zuz wrote

I just put it under a bright light and there’s literally 0. Ceramic Shield is great. My 12 pro didn’t have any either u til I dropped it and then it got one scratch. My mother got lots of micro scratches on her 11 pro max within a couple of days tho, when I had my 11 pro max I also sold it with only like 1 micro scratch that could o it be seen under a bright lamp, so so feint though.

It depends on how you use your phone. I keep it in my pocket with nothing else. The screen o my comes in contact with my fingers. It does not come into contact with anything harder than glass, so it cannot scratch. Also really no dust in my pockets

Why don’t they get dead pixels?

paulstelian97 t1_itbqaml wrote

Single dead pixels happen too commonly to replace the entire screen for that (and that's the ONLY solution -- replace the entire screen). If there's enough of them a replacement is in order though.

Apple may be more stringent than other manufacturers and put the minimum at 3, some others can have it above 10.

2

[deleted] t1_itc3f8a wrote

That’s asinine

2

paulstelian97 t1_itc3io7 wrote

It's how the industry works. A single pixel isn't worth replacing the entire unit, but that's the only fix.

2

[deleted] t1_itcci08 wrote

On iPhone just replace the screen?

1

paulstelian97 t1_itcczqt wrote

Well yes but doing it for a single dead pixel is too expensive even for Apple. Well, kinda (individual representatives MIGHT choose to do it anyway for you, but no guarantees; it's probably fine if the store has a good profit that day for example)

1

[deleted] t1_itcd9y5 wrote

It should be covered under apple care

1

paulstelian97 t1_itce1ua wrote

A single pixel might not be covered even with Apple Care+. See if the representative will do it anyway, as there's some chance.

Jozex21 t1_itcjljy wrote

i never seen one i got amoled since galaxy s2.

i believe because there is not passive TFT that turn on and off pixels.

1

[deleted] t1_ite45u7 wrote

But the pixel itself could still be broken

1

KasteferTM t1_it8tpxo wrote

It’s not a pixel it’s an iPhone /s

Seedlings0 t1_itb2gds wrote

Yeah and it’s not “dead” either, screen is clearly on and working

6

oliasawokefromadream t1_it8wgo0 wrote

Is the spot always there when the display is on? If it doesn't move and it's black, it's a dead pixel and Apple will totally swap that out if the phone is under warranty.

2

mightymitch1 t1_it9d52b wrote

It could be a spec of dirt or dust that made its way there when the screen was made. I think I saw in another thread of this happening to someone else. I’d ask apple though, they might give you a new one

Test other apps or colors or something and see if it's till there. If so then probably but I thought they were usually plain white if it's dead

1

NoTell8147 t1_itav24e wrote

Typically not for a single pixel. If it were a cluster then of course. But for a single pixel your chances are not good

1

PentaChicken t1_itb1ti3 wrote

HappySadThing t1_itbahx1 wrote

Is it still under manufacturers warranty? If not, do you have insurance/applecare on it? Apple has diagnostic tools that can say for certain. Worse case you might need a new screen
