Right, so, no data protection from someone who fixes the phone and guesses the 0000 PIN.
Sorry OP, but you trash the phone, don’t sell for parts.

No one buying the phone on eBay is interested in the data inside, and no one would think to start guessing passwords.
People on eBay are fixing them and selling them on for the £50 they can make on it, and that’s it.

That’s understandable. If I was in OPs shoes I’d go to another store and ask them to put another battery on the phone, just to see if the thing even works.
