So these phones were made years after the original release date? Or were repackaged from boxes that had chargers to boxes that didnt?

They were made after the original release date.
You can still buy an iPhone 12 today from Apple and they still make them.

that makes sense, thanks

They are made after release, I just snagged a free iphone 11 from my carrier without a charging brick, brand new device and it came with iOS 16

My 11 Pro Max had one, the 12 Pro Max didn't. But I have extra chargers.
crisss1205 t1_iyd24hj wrote
That’s because they started with the iPhone 12 and the 11 Pro series was discontinued when the 12 came out.

Any iPhone sold along with the iPhone 12 or later had a version sold without the brick. Includes the 11 and the SE 2020 (which was sold with a power brick before the 12s came out).

Yeah, I ordered my mom an iPhone 11 the day the 12 was announced and it came in the new slim box without a charger.

sue them for false advertising
anyavailablebane t1_iyejuei wrote
You would have to show an advert that said it came with a charger?

If we were all still usb-a I could see not proving a brick. But we’re not and I’ve had to buy usc-c bricks because everything uses that now.
hendrik421 t1_iyeatwu wrote
Well to be honest, apple would have provided like 5w Usb C bricks, so you would have to buy new ones anyway. But apple would have preferred ipad or macbook chargers instead of the anker ones everyone just gets.

I got my refurbished XR last year in March with no power brick. I remember thinking the new XR box was for certain a 12 box.
newecreator t1_iydriho wrote
Yeah. They did that when the iPhone 12 series released.
MaterialWall8040 t1_iye12ug wrote
Yes the 12 is when they cut the charging brick.any iPhone sold when the 12 came out got this change. Including the xr and probably the xs
dislikebuttonz t1_iyfd4lg wrote
nope the XS was discontinued when the 11/11 pro came out in 2019
it was only the XR, 11 & SE 2020 that had this change

This is the version I purchased in 2021. The guy thought I was crazy, but I knew the ones without the power brick were of newer manufacture.

I don’t think many iPhones ship with the block anymore. Once my 5W one gave out I bought the larger USB-C to Lightning one, but it didn’t come with the cable, but thankfully I had a spare one. Now I have one for my office and one for at home.

They all did
Remarkable-Sector-44 t1_iycuquo wrote
Yup, and 11 and 2020 SE, Any phone that was currently sold when Apple made the decision to pull the brick, eventually got packaged with out one.
