Personally the amount of junk I get has been drastically reduced post-midterm election. Somehow I got onto an ultra-right wing MAGA spam list, I was getting 4-6 messages a day telling me to support Ted Cruz or give all my money to some random fascist on the other side of the country. It was horrible. I would report every single one via this. No idea if this feature also helped cut down the spam but it feels good!

I switched to iPhone in June (so, iOS 15) after being on Android for over a decade and while I'm glad I did, the amount of spam calls and spam texts I got on my iPhone was absolutely insane. Google has been vastly superior in gating spam for years. It does seem like my iPhone has gotten better at it, though.

I received a consistent flow of spam right up until the end of the midterm elections. Coming from a Pixel, it surprised me to receive so much spam content right as a switched over to my first iPhone. I decided to check my auto-filtered messages on the old phone and, sure enough, all the election and random spam had already been removed from my inbox. It never asked for my attention once. I definitely miss that and the smart call screening as well.

You can tell your iPhone to filter unknown callers. They’ll go to voicemail so if they’re important you can get them anyway

I believe it sends a report to your cellular provider. This is great because many people didn’t know they could report spam texts to their provider before.

Yep, thanks for this tip. I had it turned on for a bit but ultimately wasn’t a fan of the shotgun approach. I missed calls I was expecting from companies/businesses I was trying to schedule appts with and it was kind of a hassle trying to call them back.
Maybe the solution is to turn filtering back on during election season! Haha.

Very similar experience coming from a Pixel in September. Some spam texts were starting to get through googles filters earlier this year (all male enhancement spam texts). But before that it was perfect.
I've been using the report junk feature on iOS and have had a pretty similar experience, it has slowly cut down on the amount of spam texts. Definitely a lot better than when I got the phone. For spam calls, T-mobile offers an app called Scam Shield that will block known spammers and send other annoying calls to voice mail automatically. I think other carriers offer similar apps if your not on T-mobile, highly recommend looking into them.

I miss the filtering methods from my Pixel as well. I have my iPhone set to filter unknown, but just yesterday that meant i missed a call and text from an old family friend who was in town for the day! I only saw the missed messages at the end of the day when i was clearing out my notification summary :(

Honestly, I can’t. I did not change any setting regarding the Messages app, and my iPhone ‘isn’t that old’, because 2-3 months ago I did a complete factory reset, where I manually restored my phone to the state it was before that (to eliminate any ‘bad code’ my Icloud backup may contain). So I can assure you I did not change any setting regarding.
PS: Are you on the latest IOS it supports? I’m on IOS 15.7.1, and it promts the 15.7.2 update, but I have it.
Edit: I looket it up and it should be this setting in your Messages settings, but in theory it should be on for this, but as you see mine is off.

This setting has nothing to do with the post, rather the one in the picture just divides up your messages app into different sections depending on if you have the interacted numbers in various conversations as saved or not.

on the flip side of this is the fact that i always end up hitting the junk option accidentally and have to backtrack to remove it from junk. it's a welcome but they could do it better.

I’ve had occasion to use it twice and if I recall correctly the report goes to Apple. I don’t recall what they do with the information but I doubt that it involves sending in the heavies or other forms of violence. On both occasions my unsolicited messages were pile-of-shit scamming or phishing attempts.

Get WideProtect and create a text filter for SMS for words like "vote", "election", "campaign", "donation", etc. It made my midterms much nicer.

When you use iMessage, you can report spam messages to Apple. Depending on your carrier and country or region, you can also report spam you receive with SMS and MMS.

Not a setting. If you receive a text from an unknown number this will automatically show up.

On a related subject: Does anyone here use Hiya by any chance? Doesn't appear to show any way to enable premium access. I followed all the troubleshooting on their site and sent a support request a couple of weeks ago with no response. Are there any other alternatives to use for reporting/blocking scam calls and messages? Oh and I'm not in the U.S. either.
Edit: Further reading when scrolling down it appears that WideProtect is the winner, might give that one a try. :)

Not sure who your carrier is, but T-Mobile offers spam block. They advertise it as a paid feature but there is a less granular option in the Scam Shield app that is probably sufficient for 99% of people that is free.
Other carriers might have similar apps.

I’ve set up an automation that looks for the string “http” in any message and if it detects it, asks if I want to report it as spam. This will only pick up spam that has links in it, but in my experience that’s 99% of them.
If I say yes, it forwards the message to my network’s spam reporting number, waits a few seconds, and then sends the offending number (this is the standard way of reporting it to my carrier, message first, then they reply saking you to send the number).

I’ve never gotten one even once in my life. Nor have I ever received a spam call. The only spam I get is on mail, and even there it’s never been a big issue. Wonder what I could be doing different, or if it just varies depending on what country you’re in.

EE Spam is just a contact for my network’s spam reporting number.

Even if that just makes it instantly disappear and nothing else happened.
I'm assuming there's more to it though. Haven't checked.
