Im about to get a new iphone and when I trade in my device Ill just sign out of icloud. After I sign out, will people still be able to access my messages, contacts, photos, etc.? I know this is probably a dumb question cuz I feel like it would make sense that people would lose access to everything in my phone once Ive signed out of icloud but apple says on their website you also need to go to settings and do clear device.

Most likely unless you already have find my iPhone turned off. Otherwise why would you turn in your phone with all your info on it?

But how is signing out of icloud not enough to clear out my information

Because it’s still saved on your phone. Why do you not want to wipe your phone before you trade it in?

No I do, I just think im not understanding the process. I thought signing out of my icloud would prevent people from accessing my info but I guess I also need to clear the device

Edit: I just realized, Ive been thinking of my apple id but have been typing icloud for some reason. So anyways, signing out of my apple id does not clear my info from my device?

No, it does not. You will need to wipe it. It may remove billing info but contacts, texts, photos, etc will still be on there unless you wipe your phone.

When trading in your device, most places require that the phone be reset to factory
