The built-in case screen protectors cause more scratches than they prevent due to abrasive dust slipping between the glass and protector, but the glass adhesive protectors actually hide scratches.

Im speaking from experience and never had any. I could sell my phone as new. Hmm.

If your phone has never been around abrasive dust, you're fairly safe. Just know that one small grain of sand or one fleck of metal could ruin your record.
Adhesive protectors also transmit light much better. That's why Apple switched from a replaceable floating glass outer layer to a bonded screen. Major loss for repairability, but it does look so much better.
