Sorry if this has been posted before but does anyone have any recommendations for clear cases that don’t discolour after a year and doesn’t break the bank? Gone through multiple and haven’t had any luck so far.

That doesn’t break the bank…???

The Apple Case costs $50 for a useless piece of plastic. It costs 80 here in Japan. Ew

It’s not useless if it protects your device and doesn’t turn ugly in 3 months.

It's a real shame that phone case sellers never show what plastic it is made of.

For example ASA plastic (Acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) is becoming more popular in 3D printing, one of its greatest strengths is resistance to sunlight so it doesn't degrade nearly as fast as other thermoplastics. It's really strong too, around the same as ABS.

Sooooooooo does that mean you know of a phone case that doesn’t go yellow?

Unfortunately I can only confirm that the technology exists to make them.

I had the Apple one for two years on my last phone and it’s still clear.

ESR krystec clear case? It’s a mostly Polycarbonate material so it shouldn’t yellow as much as TPU. I’ve only had it for a few days so I can’t speak for yellowing yet. It’s only $20 and it fits perfectly imo.

The official apple clear case won’t yellow. But it seems to crack fairly easily

I’ve had the Casekoo crystal clear case for my iPhone 13 Pro Max for almost a year now and with the exception of a few light scratches, it looks the same as the day I bought it. No yellowing at all. Decent protection aswell. I bought it on Amazon for approx. €15. Would highly recommend

I second this. I have the same case for my 11 Pro Max.

I prefer the protection of TPU. Currently using an Amazon branded case for $7 on an iPhone 13 PM. At that price, I’ll just replace it every other year. I bought 3 cases, so I’m good until the iPhone 19, which is my upgrade routine.

Apples clear case, or any PC clear case case. TPU is what yellows in clear cases.

This. I don’t know why people keep asking the same question over and over. Soft cases always go yellow. Hard clear cases don’t

The Apple clear case doesn’t yellow, but the buttons are hard to push and the bottom of the phone isn’t protected. I just got my rhino shield clear case today and it seems pretty good, it’s supposed to not yellow as well. The buttons are satisfying and clicky, the only bad thing so far is that it is kind of a pain to take off. My phone went into SOS mode and called emergency service 3 times trying to take the case off lol, so I would turn the phone off if you remove the case. But other than that it’s great so far.

Look for cases marketed as blue resin/anti yellowing

Spigen’s Ultra Hybrid clear case - https://www.spigen.com/products/iphone-12-pro-case-ultra-hybrid

I got this for my 13 mini expecting to not like it and return, but it’s stayed on my phone for almost a year now. The black sides ensure the case doesn’t yellow and it’s also really good quality and feels good in the hand. Buttons are also nice and clicky.

Never been a big fan of cases (clear ones especially) but this gets a thumbs up from me.

Spigen is really good but it would eventually get some discoloration

Silicone or hard cases?

1

doji2569 OP t1_j2alw9o wrote

Preferably silicone but I’d take a hard case if it meant it stayed clear

1

Mistifal t1_j2am9rn wrote

The best bet is those colored cases on side and also that have a glass back...the plastic hard cases that are clear has this problem as well...I have a silicone case for my iphone 13 pro max, but I changed it this year

2

JaxTellerr t1_j2c7xqz wrote

Any hard case will do. Soft silicone cases always turn yellow

1

Kiergard t1_j2ck5ig wrote

They all discolor. Even expensive ones which state that they never turn yellow go yellow.

We tried so many but all do it.

1

p-rking t1_j2cqqrl wrote

I agree, every single one including expensive branded goes yellow around the edges after a while. The only solution I’ve found is to get one with a hard transparent back and black edges but that’s not really a clear case.

Go on Amazon and look for the Apple clear case then look at the other offers and find any cases being sold by Amazon warehouse. I got a apple clear case for under $20 brand new.

I’m using space brand TPU clear $2 for 3 so far so good no yellowing after a year I just switched them when there’s too much scratches

I’m also looking for a clear case but I’m not sure what’s better a Hard Case or a soft one?

1

doji2569 OP t1_j2d677f wrote

Judging by the comments, hard is best if you want it to stay clearer for longer!

But what is better if my phone falls on the ground I don’t want a 1400€ phone to break

1

doji2569 OP t1_j2d6q1v wrote

I’ve not tried hard cases but I’m sure they’re durable, perhaps try looking for military grade drop protection? My current case is a soft case but with reinforced corners and my phone hasn’t even got a scratch on it which says a lot because I drop my phone way too much.

Either go full and purchase OG Apple case, or just go for cheaper one, no mid-ranger ones, they just focus on marketing and create a better brand image than the Chinese ones and sell similar but slightly higher quality product that's it (in terms of yellowing)

My iPhone 12 mini case has gone brown too, not sure how. Sometimes it looks slightly pink which is confusing.

1

RvAccrossMerica t1_j2enbmr wrote

I think it’s a coating and other materials used to make it. How about making a phone where it does not need a case. Oh wait the cell phone makers would sell less phones

I have an “anti-yellowing” soft sides and hard back case and it was fine for about a year, almost no yellowing at all (just a slightly tint after like 8 months) unfortunately in the months after it has become as yellow as the others.

This is unfortunately inevitable as they embed some chemicals to reduce the yellowing (as in cars’ headlights) but after some time it “vanishes” (it consumes itself to protect the plastic from what I know).

So I would suggest you either go for a pricier clear case (like apple’s) or you can go for a coloured (maybe even personalised) case, as that won’t yellow. Another option would be to buy a cheap case you like as many times as you need to keep it always new and transparent.

I got a rhinoshield mod nx with a clear back plate for my iphone 14 pro. so far no yellowing, i’ve had it for about a month.

Tech21, definitely is the best clear case brand! Sure it will turn yellow and scratch easily after a year but it’s definitely the best case brand ever imo

1

toboldlygame t1_j2flsfl wrote

Most will yellow over time, it’s more a question of how much time. If you want one that also protects the phone I’d go for a casemate. Had very minimal discolouring after a year and many tumbles on concrete.
