I usually upgrade when the battery can’t manage my usage through an average day anymore. Then my phone goes to my dad, his phone to my aunt, her phone to my nephew…we have an entire recycling line in the family.

Don’t ask me. I’ve been obsessed with gadgets for years and always get the latest. Don’t be like me!

I usually upgrade when I feel it is „necessary“ or I get a good deal on a used one. My upgrade path so far: 4, 5, 5s, 6s, 7, XS, 12 pro max, 13 pro max. No real pattern in upgrading for me. My old phones usually stay in the family (me => parents => kids), so the latest moment to upgrade mine is if one phone in the family cannot run the latest iOS.

For me I usually change every 2-3 years. Started with 3GS, 5, 8, 11, 13 Pro.

The fact that Apple supports their products so long is a major reason why I just got my first iPhone. Hoping to avoid the urge to upgrade as often as I did with Android (due to multiple manufacters, different features, and limited support).

4-5 years is the rule of thumb for me.

I think it definitely depends on each person and their usage. I upgrade every 4 years but I know some people who will hold onto phones that are practically begging to be replaced because "it still works". I don't think most people should be upgrading every year though, the improvements are too marginal to be worth the money.
