Hi all,

I’m a long time Apple user and I decided to share my experiences with VPNs. I will not lecture you on why having a vpn is important, i’m just gonna say it’s convenient. I recently broke my laptop while travelling (i like macs, but man they’re fragile) and had to do most of my tasks on my phone - being able to connect to a reliable vpn was a great help.

I have tried several providers on my phone and I’ll share my thoughts on all of them. I started with Cyberghost and then moved to Express VPN. Cyberghost had connection issues and was slow to load websites, which was really frustrating. If you’re on a tighter budget and have a lot of patience, Cyberghost might be an option, but the experience won’t be smooth.

Express VPN was a bit better in terms of performance, but it still had its limitations. I decided to switch a few months back when issues with streaming services became too frequent.

Lastly, I tried NordVPN and that’s the one I stuck with. It loads websites fast, has a bunch of servers. I feel like nord offers a great balance of security and privacy while maintaining the app fast and easy to use to less tech-savvy users (my dad now watches basketball games without calling me first! Shoutout to everyone who were support agents trough the holidays).

Their killswitch is a bit rocky, but there are workarounds if you contact (actual) support. Other than that i did not experience any issues, which made me stay with them.

Anyways, these are my 2 cents on best vpn for iPhone. If you decide to give nord a try, here’s a setup guide from their website: https://support.nordvpn.com/FAQ/NordVPN-setup-tutorials/1047409582/Installing-the-NordVPN-app-on-iPhone-or-iPad.htm

Hope this useful to those looking to set up vpn on thei iphones! If your exeprience is different and you have other recommendations, feel free to share, it will make this post more useful!

Nord, Express, Surfshark etc aren’t very good VPNs, you can go through this post to know more about VPN, and why the famous ones aren’t very good

TL;DR- use Mullvad VPN

Thanks for this. I'm mid subscription for surfshark, but I'll bookmark this for later. At the bottom, what does it mean by "low ethics"?

I think it means that they were involved in selling data or something similar, I’m not sure tho

Too late. Already paid for 3 year marriage with Nord

Also this is dependent on what you’re looking for out of a VPN. This post is assuming you want it for security/privacy reasons. So long as I can prevent identity theft I don’t care at all about these things, if I’m gonna use a VPN it’s literally just gonna be to get access to TV shows and movies I can’t get in the United States and for that someone like nord is the best option I’ve seen. Relatively cheap, lots of platforms, lots of server countries, and pretty good connection

Hmm.. account has had no posts or comments for 1.5 years. Logs in to brag on NordVPN.

Sounds like a good old NordVPN tactic lol. Just like their fake "9 hours left!" Sale that always seems to have 9 hours left.

Shady VPN.

I’ve been using Surfshark for a few years and have enjoyed that so far.

I always looked at the options for VPN’s, then I personally have been using ProtonVPN given I also have been using their email service. After jumping on their all-in-one subscription, it has been nice.

Also to note as it’s what destroyed ExpressVPN as an option for me when looking before: They support the infamously known asshat Ben Shapiro.

I use Nord. Strictly speaking, I don’t need a VPN specifically for my iPhone, I use it mainly for torrenting movies on my PC. Nord is also one of the few VPNs that still works with CODm in Southeast Asia which is region locked. My girlfriend plays it on her iPhone and needed a VPN to play with her friends back home so we stuck with Nord VPN.

Proton and Mullvad are your best bets. They’re privacy-conscious and secure.

Have been using Private Internet Access for years. No complaints. Their website also has proof they have been audited or subpoenaed by the FBI and they physically could not turn over documents.

Have you noticed any battery drain with any of the VPN services that you’ve tried so far?

Doesn’t the iPhone have a built-in VPN?

There is iCloud Private which (while it is still in beta) puts your browsing traffic within Safari and encrypts it. It also hides your IP address. This feature is only available to monthly paying iCloud+ subscribers.

Edit: No longer in beta with the release of iOS 16.

I use nord as well. I don’t use it often though but when I’m traveling and in some unknown Wi-Fi or trying to get Netflix movies from another country it comes in handy

I’ve been using F-Secure Freedome for years. Good speeds, trustworthy and European company. Other providers have more locations etc but it works well so I have no inclination to shop around for something new.

Question to all.. do you use on your router or simply per device?

1

ImpartialHawk t1_j20hz0e wrote

Most routers can't use VPNs, though some custom routers can. Most VPN users are using them on each device.

Smartphones and computers make it easier than a router to see if the VPN is connected or not.

I’ve been using AdGuard with AdGuard VPN for a couple years now (I think) across all my Apple devices and it works like a charm.

Blocks search ads, YouTube ads, ads on websites, has DNS protection, and VPN.

Have Nord (expiring soon) and VPN Unlimited lifetime - have it since forever and it’s actually great and a good deal.
