I have an iPhone 8 Plus and am still on iOS 15. Is it worth me updating to iOS 16? How stable is it?

I keep my iOS 15 updated to the latest for security fixes. New iOS versions don’t always mean more stability. My partner updated and sometimes has weird things happen in Mail, for example.

What did I miss? Security, stability…

Are you on 15.7.2?
jowie1974 OP t1_j6cpk7x wrote
Actually no, 15.6.1. Is there a way of updating to 15.7.2 rather than 16.3?

Before they were still pushing iOS 15 based updates to those still on iOS 15 (they still do for iPadOS), so I’m not sure.
Honestly in the end it’s up to you if you want to stay, yes ios 16 gives the latest in security and feature updates, but honestly it’s consistently more buggy than iOS 15 was for me (Honestly I wish Apple would focus more on bug fixing than more features for once)
jowie1974 OP t1_j6djcpy wrote
Yeah this is my main reason for the question. I’m fed up with regret when updating software, when everything is working so well.

I downgraded my iPad (Pro 11” 2020) down to 15.6.1 RC (because for some reason Apple is still signing it) due to bugs I was having on 16.2.1. In the end it’s up to you what you want to do

There’s something called “DelayOTA”, it’s a method which “delays” your updates afaik, but i don’t think i can talk about exploits here.
jowie1974 OP t1_j6dj2or wrote
It might be too late anyway. My phone is already telling me to install 16.3.
ComputerLovveerrBoy t1_j6dlly4 wrote
That doesn't matter, when you want to DelayOTA

Well if we’re talking about features and not security, I have yet to see anything in iOS 16 that’s useful to me. Although I’ve not checked out the updates to Focus, so will definitely look into that.

No.

The latest iOS 16.3 update is more or so stable compared to the previous versions. My mom also has an 8 Plus that I've kept on iOS 15 mostly because there might be a hit on the battery life and I wouldn't want my mom to go through that. Expect a slight change for the battery life. In all honesty though, Apple is still pushing out security updates for iOS 15 so if you really want a few features exclusive to iOS 16 like the change in lockscreen, iMessage finally being able to delete messages etc. then sure go for it. I would recommend staying on iOS 15 for the time being though. iOS 16.0>16.3 has overall been a bugfest.

Thanks. I just need to find out a way of updating my phone to the latest iOS 15 because it is currently stuck on 15.6.3 and the only path available to me is all the way to 16.3.
Comfortable-Basil-47 t1_j6haq6p wrote
Here you go. I believe this method still works and gets you back to 15.6 RC(not the same as the one you have now) and lets you OTA update to 15.7.2.

EDIT:
New link because I think Apple made it possible to update to 16.1.2 through the 15.6 method not 15.7.2:

Thanks for the link! I'm looking through the instructions and it seems pretty complicated, a little out of my league these days 😂 I will have a ponder but most likely I will stay on 15.6.3 for a bit and then bite the bullet when I have to update to 16.3.
Comfortable-Basil-47 t1_j6hc4mi wrote
Yeah 15.6.3 isn't terrible and decently secure. Good battery life. Don't update unless you have to. I'd say iOS 16.7 is where it stabilizes so consider updating then.
jowie1974 OP t1_j6hc6v2 wrote
Mad isn't it... I'll probably be updating when everyone is jumping on iOS 17 Beta 😂
Comfortable-Basil-47 t1_j6hco8m wrote
Only problem might be if Apple stops giving major updates to the 8 plus. It was released back in 2017 and Apple has a policy of 5 major updates with 2 more years of security updates so it's not likely. 16.7.1 or 16.7.2 is your best bet.
jowie1974 OP t1_j6hczks wrote
Yeah but I assume that even if iOS 17 doesn't support the 8 Plus, I will be able to update to the latest iOS 16? At some point I will upgrade my iPhone, but right now it's stable and it does everything I want it to. I feel the same about iOS 15, which is why I don't want to update. I like everything being stable.
jowie1974 OP t1_j6hc3ls wrote
Funnily, I just read a thread on Reddit where lots of people are having problems with HomeKit on iOS 16.3. I rely on HomeKit so I really don't want to have to deal with that!
DarkRyoushii t1_j6cnit9 wrote
As others have already said, it is always worth updating to the latest available version. On average, everything works better/faster/more securely.
Only the worst security bug patches get “backported”; not all known bugs are fixed.
jowie1974 OP t1_j6cq50x wrote
I agree about security, but some updates that add features do have a tendency to destabilise them. Especially point-zero releases. I should hope 16 is pretty stable in general by now, but like I mentioned before, my partner is having random issues with Mail since updating.

iOS 16.3 is fine….you’re honestly just putting your devices at risk by not updating at this point

I’d recommend the current iOS 16.3. But remember to NOT have other apps active except the Settings app when you do the update.
brionical27 t1_j6djt78 wrote
Unless most/some of the features are worth it, you probably shouldn’t upgrade, both of them are pretty stable so it’s a case of if you want your live wallpapers or not
