It's the battery optimization. This is what you want the charger to do. It will only fully charge right before you usually take it off the charger to reduce wear on the battery.
It will not fully charge the battery until it thinks it needs to or you explicitly tell it too via the optimized charging notification on the Lock Screen

No, it literally stops at 56% and stays like that. In other words half the time it is at 100% at 9 am. The rest of the time it’s at 56% at 9am (like today).

I would suggest calling Apple Support, and asking them to run a battery diagnostic remotely. That way they will have the result logged under the serial number of your iPhone. Then they might suggest a restore (erase/reinstall iOS), or taking it in for repair. In either case, the battery history will be erased along with the rest of your user data.

The cable and or the charging brick you use for overnight charging your problem then.
Swap the cable with a known good one you have in the house and see what happens. If problem still occurs then swap charging bricks.

This is apples optimized charging. It learns when you unplug your phone and maps out how to charge it to 100% 30 min before you wake up. There is nothing wrong.

That’s not how optimised battery charging works, it should charge at full speed to 80% and then wait. It wouldn’t make sense otherwise, you may want to charge your phone before going for night out and phone wouldn’t charge?

Well, I'm after preserving Battery Capacity (99% currently) for the time being. Though I have (2) 20W USBC adapters, a MagSafe puck, an NOS 5W (at work) plus several USBC cables (all OEM Apple) at my disposal..Slow charging is best for prolonging Li-ion batt life/less stress to battery (when in no hurry or for overnight charging).

Call AppleCare and they will run an MRI (mobile resource inspector) remotely from your device.
This will determine whether it is hardware, software or environmental.
If it’s hardware, could he replaced under warranty. If not, argue your case.
If it’s software (hopefully it is as it’s the easiest fix) then backup, restore software from PC/Mac, restore backup and monitor for few days.
If it’s none of the above then it’s environmental. Wall adapter, cable, power board or wall socket.
Give it a shot, call takes 10 minutes and you’ll have a better direction to head in that way.

Every once in a while my iPhone says it is charging but the battery percentage doesn’t change. After restarting the phone the battery updates, if you haven’t already, try a restart.

Omg everyone on here is wrong - you have your phone set to optimize battery life and that means not fully charging until close to when you normally disconnect it. This makes the battery last longer. Turn off “optimize battery life” and it’ll charge fully every time.

yes, if you plan on keeping your phone for years and years, it’s optimal to not charge beyond 60 to 70% because charging to 100% every time wears the battery out faster
but if you’re one of those people that buys a new phone every year then I guess it doesn’t matter

pausing at 60% is way better for preserving overall battery capacity long-term than 80%. If you leave the battery in a suspended state it should ideally be as close to 50 as possible. I’d consider him lucky.

Try turning off your phone and charging it. That way, you can identify jf the charger/cable/port is faulty.

All my Apple power chords broke easily because I'm a power user. I had to recycle through cheap power cords. Each time I had a power charging problem.
Right now I'm using skull candy power cord but have no Idea how long it will last.
I'm saying this it's because you might suspect it's the battery but think of that last and check everything else before that. I also thought it was the battery for my mac air but it wasn't

I usually charge on slow chargers (5W or 10W) overnight to avoid heating up the battery. Is it better to just stick with the usb C (20W or even more?) brick and let the phone optimize the charging?

Yep, optimized charging is on and I've witnessed it first hand (if say I have to wake up for early meetings, I'll see my phone sitting at 80%). The issue described in the original post shows the charging stop at 50% or so and stay there

That will tell you the "health" of the battery, which you can already see under the battery menu in Settings. There is a separate "Battery Usage" diagnostic Apple support can run; which doesn't provide much additional information, but might be useful if the problem persists after a restore.

If you rule out physical symptoms (port is clear, symptom is replicated with known good cables and adapters), then power the device off. Don’t do a hard resetc that won’t change the device state.

Press volume up, down, then press and hold side button till apple logo appears and let go. If there’s a software glitch preventing the charging this should clear that.

A hard reset interrupts the processes that are running and restarts the device to the same state. It will not resolve this issue. Powering the device off entirely will purge temporary files and possibly resolve a software related issue.
Source: I am an ACiT that has directly observed and resolved this issue multiple times.

I use a wooden toothpick that I’ve nibbled the end a little bit on. The roughened up slightly moist wood works great for grabbing lint and dust really well and no metal on metal damage.

Same problem here with iPhone 13 mini. I posted some issues and reported them to Apple, no news. Some software bugs they don't want to address. Neither related to the cable (factory USB cable) nor the port. Hopefully, this gets resolved in iOS 16.3.

It’s not always that clear, charging with 5V requires more amps and that will lead to components heating up. So you may no be doing any favours to your battery by charging with slower brick (unless it’s one of those 5V 1A brick)
I had flir picture of power bank with charging chip running at 110C/230F charging at 5V 2.5A, can’t find it though, probably deleted.
There’s a reason why electricity from power plants is transferred at up to 1.000.000 Volt.

Had the exact same issue on my iPhone 11 after upgrading from iOS 15 to 16.2. Was using a non genuine wireless charger that charges my watch, AirPods and phone. Simply swapped the power brick to a genuine Apple charger and my phone charges as normal again.

With the 5W brick, this 13 PM is cool to the touch. Both times were inside a case.

Yeah, with MagSafe 25% of energy is wasted as heat (takes 20 watt but delivering only 15 to phone). 20 watt is almost at limit how fast 13 can charge (22watt max I think), and 5 watt (5V at 1A) charger is super slow in comparison. That’s why in my original comment I said specifically that if you use that charger you’ll be good. How long does it take to fully charge? Must be 4h at minimum?

Edit: actually the blues are also darker. The yellow up in the battery indicator are the same though.

This happens half the time. Sometimes it’ll charge to 100%. Rest of the time it’s 50-60%.
Im using one of those thicker iPad chargers with factory usbA cable. Don’t want to use a usb c fast charger for overnight charge
