This issue coming up by in my background check is exactly what I am worried about. Yeah I am getting similar opinion about the amount being not worth pursuing anything legal from people around me here. I guess I will have to learn to live with this system for bad landlords till I can earn enough to get my own place to live. This incident has scared me of renting anything here in NJ in near future though.

This is not an issue unique to New Jersey. 900 in my opinion is not worth pursuing. If you really want you can wait until you’ve secured a lease prior to bringing a case against your former landlord.

Yes I am not going to pursue this and at this point that guy is just not worth my time, energy and mental health.
