Does anyone have information or experience on how to or where to dispose of construction debris?

We renovated a small closet and have some mixed debris to dispose of - drywall, old wood flooring, old closet system, etc. does anyone know of a city dump or disposal center that I can take these items to? The Hudson county site seemingly only refers to residential recycling, e-waste disposal, etc.

For small jobs, your best bet is to bundle it up as small as you can and make it easy for the collectors to put in the truck. In my experience, they won't bat an eye.

can confirm, i’ve left up to 6 contractor bags full of this stuff out at a time, and they just take it with everything else. only reason i haven’t put more out at once is that i haven’t happened to have more.

I called someone to haul my stuff away since I don’t have a way to move it.

I used Spartan Demolition.

Yeah I was hoping not to have to call a service since it is such a small amount I could easily fit it all into my SUV … thanks for the rec

The days of the city accepting DIY debris from its residents at the 440 facility are long over. Other than paying a demo carting company, the only drive up place I know is Cardella up on Tonnelle. I think they have like $125 minimum but that covers a literal ton of waste.

I put out a few bags a week and ended up getting a ticket a month later for $110. I had a lot more to throw out so I ended up using Junkin Irishmen to throw out the rest -- they cleared out a small bedrooms pile worth and old trims, studs, etc for $650 from the 3rd floor (2 flights).

My experience has been they don't care as long as the bag isn't too heavy and they can't see that it's construction debris. 5 lb of rubble in a 33 garbage bag with household trash is never noticed, but it would take a long time to get rid of a few hundred pounds!

How did they find out a few months later? Or were you dumping for months?

I put between 2 to 4 bags out every week or every other, for around a month. Could be the bags were a bit too heavy, or not neatly concealed? Or the policeman was ticket happy on Thanksgiving week 🤷‍♀️. He wrote me 2 tickets, but the prosecutor was confused as to why he wrote me 2, so he took the second one off.

Update: I left a couple black contractors bags out last night for garbage pick up as a test. They took them! Now fingers crossed that I don’t get a ticket. Thanks all!

I had to call to have mine removed and it was only a few bags. Just be careful because the city can fine you if they see you are throwing out construction debris.

Got it, thank you. Yeah I already got a “warning” because I included a pizza box with my cardboard on recycling day…. apparently they aren’t recyclable because of the grease/food remnants. Definitely don’t want an actual fine.

You have to hire a carting company to have it done professionally. Small jobs can just be put in the kitchen garbage

Bagster. It's about $300 for 3,000 pounds.

I used them before. Works great. You can usually buy the bags at Lowe's or Home Depot.

Reliable Jim’s is the cheapest I’ve found in the area, they’ll come to you and pick up everything, they are very fast and relatively cheap and do all the lifting and disposing for you. I think for a smaller amount of debris which this sounds like, they may quote you like 300ish, it’s surprisingly cheaper than renting a dumpster and doing it all yourself

I actually used them for demo on another project- they were great! Didn’t realize they do pick up / disposal also, thanks.

Junk busters which was on Thumbtack was good. I had like 10 bags of debris, a table and concrete. They took it and would have bagged it had I not for 250.
