welcome all ideas and theories for JC transportation in the future. as the city grows, how should the city think about public transportation? more bus lines? lightrail expansions? better connections to NYC? does any of this seem likely? are we doomed to be in a congested city ?

It is extraordinarily difficult to figure out the bus routes in JC (or an NJ Transit route).

Anyway, a dedicated bus lane or two would be amazing.

Install card chip readers instead of swiping cards in those ticket machines at PATH/MTA.

I know someone who was involved in the MTA contract for the omny chip reading tech. Originally, PATH and the MYA were both on board and this would have been a reality. PATH obviously pulled out, apparently because they wanted it cheaper. Yet here we are…

I feel like this is going to go terribly when Path does roll it out. What happens to the money on my smartlink card? Will it get transferred over to whatever the new system is? Isn’t this supposed to happen next year?

Gonna be hilarious when they hike the fare then reduce service

Edit: Actually, this article says the rollout is supposed to happen mid-2023. I don't see that happening, I imagine there's gonna be a big media campaign on social media/in the stations before it happens.

Why not? There used to be several lines through Hudson county including the heights. You can still see the rails through the pavement in some places. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Hudson_County_Railway

I suppose it could work there too but summit is narrower and more residential (at least where I live). That’s why busses run down central now.

JKF subway to connect bayonne thru North Bergen that connects at JSQ to NYC bound path. I believe this would help balance development throughout the city going forward.

Also NYC bound path trains going to high speed rail, exponentially increasing capacity/decreasing travel time

I have a gripe about the buses. Mostly:

-Bus routes & timetables should be posted by bus stops with a map.

-Bus fare should be posted by bus routes next to the nonexistent map which should be there.

-Buses should be free but that’s another matter

-I want a bus route map

Fix the roads; reimagine intersections, parking solutions, etc. Fix that mess called Journal Square.

Other cities use a uniformed body of traffic law enforcers tasked with ticketing poor driving behavior and this function has a calming effect on crazy traffic problems. I’m just saying maybe we should look into this first?

No we shouldn’t. They need to just make it completely infeasible for driving to be worth anyone’s time or money. More light rail on every two way street please

The PATH has some kind of "commuter council" that regularly addresses concerns, and I'm sure NJ Transit might have something similar but I haven't been using their services enough to see any ads pertaining to that as I did on the PATH. I can't really say that the Jersey City local level government has any control over either agency, but they probably have some influence if someone was able to put together a plan that doesn't hike taxes or do some other sort of harm.

I wish there were better connections to get to other neighborhoods in Jersey City besides VIA. VIA most times is appalling how long it takes to wait for the next ride, up to 45 minutes and sometimes they get cancelled.

We could use a bit of everything you mentioned. Sadly, no, nothing seems likely.

Imagine how insane the idea of the PATH or subway would seem now. Somehow we've engineered a society that makes it impossible to do things that used to be ordinary.

More buses to NYC from all neighborhoods. More light rails as well. I would prefer PATH expansion to other parts of the city but I’m not sure how feasible it would be?
