my partner and i are looking to foster and potentially adopt a cat and have been looking for shelters to contact - the most common recommendation is liberty humane society, but we have heard pretty mixed reviews on animal treatment and we were weirded out that they wouldn't let us come by the shelter to see it

has anyone had good experiences elsewhere?

I'll agree on LHS being a shit show, but that's not the fault of any animal needing a home. Just hold your nose and go local.

JerseyCats, Pad Paws Rescue and Next Chance Rescue are all JC based!

JerseyCats! Totally supportive and amazing, they have saved so many cats. Ask for Beverly. Also they have a foster-to-adopt program with no pressure, so that's amazing for both the people and the cats.

You’re adopting a pet that desperately needs a forever home. If animals are treated badly by a particular agency then it’s even more important to adopt from them.
My neighbors and I both adopted from LHS and never looked back. Both babies are the sweetest cats and now they even hang out together. Thank you so much for adopting 🙏

Most of the negative things said about LHS are untrue, they're not abusive or a high kill shelter. We've fostered dozens of kittens for them, they have hardworking and caring staff. That said, someone high in management there seems to be a Covid-phobic nutcase. They still won't let people into the shelter even masked, and expect people to adopt a new family member over Zoom!

We adopted our sweet new adult boy cat at Newark Associated Humane. They were great, and didn't require the obnoxious & intrusive application forms, multiple references, and vet calls that the 'crazy cat lady' rescues do. Newark has animals that need homes, and don't have time to indulge in screwing around. Highly recommended if you have a car, they're in the ass end of nowhere there.

Thank you for setting the record straight. LHS does amazing work with many animals, and JC strays would be a lot worse off without their support. At the very least, we should support them.

Another vote for Jersey Cats, Pad Paws, and Next Chance Rescue. All great groups that I've fostered for / supported.

OP - please stay local with your foster / adoption if you can.

If you don't mind crossing the river, Best Friends Animal Society in SoHo. The NYC ACCs are pretty nice as well.

Check out the Humane Society of Bergen County in Lyndhurst. We recently adopted a 16-week old kitten from there, and have been donating there for years. They always have a lot of cats and the guy who runs the place is the nicest person.

Nextchancerescue.com with local rescues in JC up the hill. We adopted our daughter kitty from them and they were so amazing and helpful and very professional.

Try a county shelter. I got my shy black cat from Woodbridge, fee was $50. During Spring time they will have plenty of kittens to choose from!

I adopted my little guy from Fur Friends in Need. They are local and are 100% foster volunteer based. So no shelter. But they can arrange for a meet and greet and do an amazing job with matching pets with their right humans.
