I'm looking to join a gym in downtown Jersey City and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations. I'm hoping to find a gym that is clean, well-equipped, and has a good variety of workout options.

I've looked online and found a few gyms in the area, but I'd love to hear from people who have personal experience with any of them. If you're a member of a gym in downtown Jersey City, I'd love to hear what you think of it. What do you like about it? What don't you like? Are the staff friendly and helpful? Is it usually crowded or can you find a spot to work out easily?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations or insights you can offer!

Base is kind of the only good option downtown. A lot of space and equipment. Like all gyms, it’s busy during prime times. The gym itself is very clean but they could do a better job in the locker rooms.

I loved Base when I was a member. So many things you'd find in a high end gym (sauna, cold towels, built in locks) for not that crazy of a price. And free classes, including a spin room, with your membership. The spin classes alone were enough for me because it was essentially the cost of a boutique spin studio, except it comes with a whole gym too.

I haven't been a member in 4 or 5 years just because I moved to a building with a gym and it's sufficient for me, but unless it changed in the past few years I'd absolutely recommend it.

JCFit crossfit is great! I don't currently go but love them and the people that go are nice!

Unfortunately Base is the only real option. It gets crowded because of this.

If you want crossfit type boutique class-oriented gyms, there's a few other options (JCFit, Ironbound, etc). I don't use these gyms so idk.

Base gym is crazy expensive if you’re not subsidized by your company. Somthing like $190 month to month. Metro fitness is in Newport and it’s $55

Originally Club H, Base Gym is prominently positioned on Columbus Drive. It was better when it was Club H. And yes, Club H is a high end gym.

World Boxing Gym is dirty, unkept, and most of the staff is not friendly or helpful, so it wouldn't fit into what OP is looking for.

They literally don't clean. They have bottles at the desk that members can use on their own to clean equipment themselves when they use it, and not everyone does. It has dirty CARPET (in a gym 🤮) that smells and looks like it hasn't been vacuumed or shampooed since the 1990s, there are visible spiderwebs in places throughout the gym, the mats are filthy and worn and also look like they've been used and not cleaned since the 90s, there's no proper filtration and air flow, and I could go on. They hardly even pick up weights and return them to where they belong. Lack of cleanliness is definitely not an opinion, it's a fact.

As for friendly people, sure the members are, but certainly not most of the staff. Maybe if you have been going there every day for 30 years, they say hello. I am a long term resident, but most of the staff is not long term staff. There's a gentleman in the morning and 1 female who's sometimes there in the afternoon who are the exception to the rule and are always pleasant. Every other staff member I've encountered doesn't even look at you when you come and go, and couldn't bother to say hello or goodbye, even when I say it to them! They're just weird. I've never experienced that in ANY gym I have ever gone to. Even gyms with bad service, if you say hello 1st, they'll at least respond.

Base is busier than an ant at a family reunion. Another spot that might be viable is Newport Swim. It’s also packed but they got a pooool.

Base is the one true option in the area that I can walk to and it’s a shit show. Always overcrowded, poorly trained staff and price is high for what you get. I’ve written emails to Equinox and Lifetime fitness begging them to open up a gym here.
