Hi, all. I hope this is the correct sub to ask about this.

I will be in NJ for the first time in November for an event. There's a concert at MSG that I'd like to attend on Sunday night while I'm there. I'll be staying at the Courtyard Jersey City Newport which I understand is right next to the Newport PATH station. For reference, I'm a petite woman and will be going to MSG and returning alone. I'm an adult but often get mistaken for a teenager.

Will it be safe for me ride the train from NYC back to Jersey City alone at night or should I find another means of transportation back to Jersey City? Do Uber/Lyft transport from NY to NJ? I don't mind the cost. I just want to take a safe route since I'll be alone. Public transportation is not the main mode of transportation where I live so I don't want to go into it naively.

Update: Thank you, everyone, for your responses and for pointing out an obvious factor that I did not consider. I think I'll be fine with the train. I can count on one hand the number of times I've taken a train so while I'm not under the delusion that NYC is Gotham City or anything, I just wanted to make sure I'm being the right amount of cautious.

what concert? extremely likely there will be plenty of people making the return trip with you. It won't be desolate or anything.

Yes, someone else pointed that out and I didn't consider the others coming the same way. I think I'll be good with the PATH train.

I am a small woman who is frequently mistaken for a teenager and I have not felt uncomfortable taking the PATH back after midnight. However if the cost of an Uber is not an object, the nighttime headways are EXTREMELY annoying if you just miss the train.

How late is late? My inclination is that you’ll be just fine taking the PATH. It’s likely you’ll be sharing your train car with others coming home from the concert as well. Rideshare from MSG to JC would probably cost $50+.

I feel like prices for lift and Uber have gone wayyy up. I would budget 90, especially after a concert.

I took this trip maybe 2 months ago. Idk if it’s gone up since then.

Thank you. If I had to guess, I'd say around 10:30 to 11:00ish. I didn't think about other concertgoers going back to the same area. Maybe my plan will be to see if I can spot others going my way but have a plan b just in case I feel uneasy.

That's not late. The PATH will still be running standard evening schedule until 11, it's also just a block away from MSG.

suomynona777 t1_iqxvpv4 wrote

What time does it run after 11?

1

nycdevil t1_iqy6flb wrote

Depends on the time, it's not as regular, they go from 20 minutes to something like 45 minutes at 2-4am.

suomynona777 t1_iqy9ik3 wrote

Not too bad. Just gotta time it properly...while drunk.

Download the RidePATH app for schedules and trip planning.

dees84 OP t1_iqy1uvu wrote

I will do that. Do the schedules usually change for weekends vs weekdays?

1

aubreypizza t1_iqyf7f2 wrote

Yup if it’s after 11 and stops in Hoboken just don’t get off. The train will sit for about 5 min then continue on towards Newport, grove etc.

4

Vince_BK t1_iqy41y5 wrote

Yes weekends and overnights after 11pm the JSQ-33 line stops in HOB in both directions.

FelixTaran t1_iqwr2ar wrote

Most concerts at MSG end at 10 or 11. That’s not actually late night in public transportation. You should be fine.

WendysFrostyandFries t1_iqwt7i5 wrote

Hey you should be safe. Travel in a pack with the other concert goers. You’re staying right near the path so the walk won’t be too far. You probably already know this but trust your instincts and do not stop for anyone. Have a good time!

katlulu t1_iqx0ofh wrote

You've got plenty of answers already, but still wanted to add... I'm also a petite woman and used to live in downtown JC. The path is literally a party late into the evening especially when an event is happening at MSG. The only times I've felt weird are between 3am-5am and even then there's still a good amount of people around. Outside of that, it feels very safe!

keepseeing444 t1_iqxksw0 wrote

Your hotel is literally 1 minute walk from Newport station entrance so you will have near zero chance of danger. PATH is not NYC subway - it’s 10X safer than NYC system w crazies. In addition Newport/Pavonia PATH stop is probably one of the safest within Jersey City as that area has lots of foot traffic from highrise apartments even late at night.

More 2 million people use public transportation every day and the vast majority aren't stabbed even once. You'll be fine.

The lanternflies will be dead by then. You'll be safe.

I live in the Newport area and go to concerts and sporting events at MSG, you will be fine and as others said most likely to see others going to the same event.

Yes, the PATH train works and is very convenient for your location as long as you're travelling back before midnight. If you're traveling later than midnight, and don't mind the cost, check the times. If the train schedule works for you, go for it, if you just missed one, just save yourself the hassle of the wait and the crowds and take a Lyft!

JerseyCityLocalZone5 t1_iqwz7ml wrote

Yeah you will be more than fine/safe. If it helps, look for the conductor when it pulls up to the station and situate yourself in that cart. I’ve always done that from time to time. He/she does bounce back and forth between two adjacent carts to open up the doors depending on the station but that’s always a safe bet.

Atuk-77 t1_iqwzefo wrote

Caution is always important but in general the PATH is very safe even past mid night.

Fellow petite woman here. I went to a concert at MSG the other week with all NYC-resident friends, so I took the PATH back solo and I felt very comfortable the whole time. Train was busy with other concert goers and sports fans.

jesq t1_iqwys9s wrote

You’ll be fine. I’ve don’t this multiple times. Just be aware after a certain time the train also stops at Hoboken.

jersey385 t1_iqx9v38 wrote

As another petite lady, I feel fine taking the train back at that time under normal circumstances. In a concert situation I believe the train will be quite crowded which in my mind is better.

2

PixelSquish t1_iqy0opt wrote

Just an FYI there is an actual PATH train schedule, so if you don't want to be waiting in the station for 30 minutes by just missing a train, you can stop and get a drink or bite of food nearby before going into the PATH at 33rd. And yes there's an app for that.

Comprehensive-Win247 t1_iqzd9lf wrote

If you like Korean food, check out Koreatown nearby on W 32 St between Broadway & 5th Ave. Very lively there and many restaurants open late.

JerseyCity_Nuyorican t1_iqylsri wrote

You should be fine but always be alert while taking public transportation and watch out for the rats outside of Newport PATH station!

2

joeynnj t1_iqza6jy wrote

Some advice for you: When you walk to the PATH from MSG, walk ON 34th Street. It will be well lit and crowded. Although the walk is not long, some of the smaller streets in that area have gotten sketchy, especially after hours. Also note that at that time you’ll have to enter the PATH station at the corner of 32nd and 6th because the other entrances will be closed.

DevChatt t1_iqwv6c4 wrote

Yeah 1030-11 isn’t too late. You should be fine.

EarthGoddessDude t1_iqwzomv wrote

Hey OP, be sure to check out downtown JC’s vibrant downtown scene if you have a chance. You can either walk from Newport (maybe 10-15 min tops) or take the Path train to Grove. Evenings around the Grove street / Newark Ave area are quite nice when the weather is nice. Plenty of food, drink and all around fun.

jjvvllxx t1_iqwzzzp wrote

once, I was taking 33rd street back jc and the police officer told me none of the trains were working/ there was police activity that made the trains not work. so I had to take an uber home. but the bus is always a good option too

1

Laraujo31 t1_iqxiga2 wrote

You should be just fine. Chances are that you will be on the train with a lot of fellow concert goers.

1

WooliesWhiteLeg t1_iqxpfap wrote

The train will be safe but it won’t be quick. If safety of your issue, the path will be fine. If you’d like to make this trip in less than an hour, an Uber is the way to go

Equivalent_Base901 t1_iqy8s9v wrote

I echo others who have mentioned that the PATH train should be just fine; you can't beat the $2.75 price tag; 11pm is not late by NYC standards, there still will be plenty of foot traffic near the Newport station. For an added level of comfort, though, I want to mention that the conductor, who opens/closes the doors at each station, is in the frontmost car of the PATH train. If you're nervous, you could ride that car.

Tonydub973 t1_iqytpxs wrote

You’ll be fine , there will prob be plenty of people out at that time/later anyway just always keep your wits/ be aware of your surroundings! Have fun and good luck

You will be fine, the courtyard is a short walk from the path and plenty of people out on weekends

Yeah I did it all the time 19-23 as a female. All hours of the night, just keep an eye out obviously since it's the city

The only sketchy part is the (very short) walk from MSG to PATH. Try to walk with a crowd of fellow concert goers. Other than that, totally safe .
