Hi JC—new to the area and looking for the best place to donate furniture. We accidentally ordered the wrong size bed frame and missed the window for returns. It’s a twin so I thought there might be a shelter that could use it, or an org that helps furnish homes? Any recommendations appreciated!

We tried to donate furniture back in peak pandemic days and ended up just selling on Craigslist because we couldn’t find anywhere that would take it.

Yea, furniture is pretty tough. It's cheaper to pay one of those junk haulers to take old furniture than to donate it. The ones that do take furniture require sizable donations, presumably to offset the space to store it, and labor to actually move it if you want it picked up.

And that's if you can find someone who will take it.

You could try Habitat for Humanity's ReStore: https://www.habitat.org/local/restore?zip=07302

But also if you bought on a credit card that has an extended return window, try that. Or convince customer service at the store that you are just trying to exchange for a different size of the same model and see if they can make an exception.

Following this. I have some baby stuff that i am looking to donate as well. I tried reaching out to the single mothers shelter in downtown but they told me they do not take donations.

Hope House takes donations of diapers and unopened formula. York St project takes toys (unopened). Giving away used baby stuff will be tough, especially anything that touches food or milk. Best to post on your local buy nothing/sell nothing Facebook group.

Thanks for the recommendation. I am just trying to avoid donating it somewhere that will wind up selling it.

I know a few people hosting Ukrainian refugees in Jersey City and other nearby towns. I've already given away two beds and a fold out sofa, but there are some big families out there and they could probably use more! DM me and I can put you in touch, they or I can pick up the bed.
