From personal experience this will not be a highly utilitized biking route. I have never seen a bike down there in my two years of living here.

Caven Point Road has been unridable for over a year because the pavement was removed. Riding a bike on it was like putting yourself through a rock tumbler. I don't think it makes sense to use recent history as any evidence for anything given that the road was unridable (and I'm not making a safety argument here --- it was like physically impossible to ride a bike on that road without getting genital blisters).

I've used this route on my bike to get to Grove Street from Bayonne all this Summer. I've also seen about four other bicyclists. With how terrible most of the road is for bikers, I was surprised to see other cyclists. These new lines and pavement will only encourage more cyclists.

I would love to bike that way more often to and from Cochrane Field, but it's so damn dangerous.

Unfortunately, even with this bike lane, the worst stretch, Burma Road and Phillip Street, remains with no bike lane. Until that section is adressed, bicycling to Caven Point from downtown will remain frightening and underused.

Robin.
