Are they the ones to blame for the Lightning McQueen-level paving job on Philip Street?

Hopefully the sidewalk is done all the way through? Last time I was running it was all bush and I lost my virginity.
TomGNYC t1_it732ms wrote
good result hopefully but the plan and execution was insane:
Step 1: rip up the existing pavement in preparation for the repaving
Step 2: wait 2 years
Step 3: repave
Can someone explain why we had to drive over a landscape resembling the surface of the moon for 2 years instead of them just repaving the next week?

Unfortunately they removed the left turn lane at chapel ave so now it takes like 5 extra minutes to make a left turn there.

This part! How could anyone study this intersection and decide this as the best outcome?
Positive_Debate7048 t1_itbpmxv wrote
The funniest part is that the “protected “ bike lane ends abruptly at the entrance to liberty national

only took a literal year.
rubensinclair t1_it6umpl wrote
Uh, I think it was longer than that.

Why is there a wider inside lane, then narrow outer bike lane? Are they two bike lanes, one for each direction? If so why is the inside lane wider?
Robin.
ComplexAromatic7178 t1_it5vk4e wrote
Maybe they're putting in flexposts in the smaller lane later to make it a protected bike lane

Nothing could be worse than the 2-foot-shoulder-turned-bike-lane on the Jersey Ave bridge to LSC

And I got yelled at the other day for riding on the sidewalk. Ridiculous.
bodhipooh t1_it7lve6 wrote
I think what you call an inside lane is actually a shoulder. Looking at the pic, what I see (from left to right) is: shoulder (emergency) lane, bike lane, northbound lane, southbound lane.
NaedDrawoh t1_it8gq5w wrote
I assumed (left to right): bike lane (two directions), buffer (flexposts?), northbound lane, southbound lane, country road "shoulder".
robin_tern t1_itnu5h6 wrote
Naeddrawoh is correct! It's painted now, the inside lane is split into a two directional bike-lane, while the outer part is a hashed out buffer from the cars. Maybe they will add the plastic dividers later.
Robin.
NaedDrawoh t1_itopk20 wrote
Awesome. Thanks for the update Robin! I don't like the two way single bike lanes on roads with lots of intersections or places to go because turning feels unsafe if you're not taking the lane. But this road is like a mile or two with nothing so seems great. Flex posts or jersey barriers please! Will ride it tomorrow!
robin_tern t1_it7me9s wrote
In that case there is no bike lane in the other direction?
Also wouldn't it be safer to have the bike lane inside the shoulder?
Robin.
bodhipooh t1_it7omh8 wrote
That super narrow thing on the far right of the picture can't possibly be a bike lane. And, the road has to have a shoulder because of the traffic expected to travel there. The shoulder is always placed on the far right lane on roadways that have them. I am almost entirely certain that is a shoulder. And, you definitely don't want the bike lane to be to the far right lane because trucks (or other vehicles) pulling over in an emergency will do so all the way to the right and would block the bike lane.

Idk!!!!

Ooh! That looks good. The shoulders were so bad for so long out there. Thanks for the heads up!

From personal experience this will not be a highly utilitized biking route. I have never seen a bike down there in my two years of living here.
NaedDrawoh t1_it8g8fa wrote
Caven Point Road has been unridable for over a year because the pavement was removed. Riding a bike on it was like putting yourself through a rock tumbler. I don't think it makes sense to use recent history as any evidence for anything given that the road was unridable (and I'm not making a safety argument here --- it was like physically impossible to ride a bike on that road without getting genital blisters).
Al-fa t1_it7scwy wrote
I've used this route on my bike to get to Grove Street from Bayonne all this Summer. I've also seen about four other bicyclists. With how terrible most of the road is for bikers, I was surprised to see other cyclists. These new lines and pavement will only encourage more cyclists.

I would love to bike that way more often to and from Cochrane Field, but it's so damn dangerous.
Unfortunately, even with this bike lane, the worst stretch, Burma Road and Phillip Street, remains with no bike lane. Until that section is adressed, bicycling to Caven Point from downtown will remain frightening and underused.
Robin.
