Every time someone posts about wonderbagel the tales get taller and taller. Next post will be someone waited 2 hours in line and the guy behind the counter spit at him.

It’s not the best bagel place, but jeez.

It’s the only decent bagel within walking distance. I don’t understand the confusion

It's honestly not THAT bad. Sure, it's not the best of the best, but the amount of hate it gets is as much a meme now as "LUXURY HOUSING".

Location is convenient that's why people go. Service is just fine, workers are busy.

It's been a while since I've eaten at Wonder Bagel, but when I lived in DTJC (now in JSQ), I absolutely loved Wonder Bagel and would eat there once or twice a week. But, you need to make sure you a bagel that's recently out of the oven. If you get a stale bagel, it'll be bleh. If you get your bagel toasted, that's your fault and on you.

I was particularly a fan of their whole wheat bagels. Chewy deliciousness.

I have no idea how it's these days though.

Zugzool t1_itvmbav wrote

It’s a bagel shop that you can walk to — it’s subpar, but still one of the only shops in downtown that makes bagels on site.

RealChadPennington t1_itvqn76 wrote

It’s pretty crazy that jersey city/Hoboken has 0 good bagel shops. Not sure how that is even possible.

6

Toonaami t1_itvqqtf wrote

The place is sub par at best but it’s easy to be the best when there’s only 1 option.

ribasad t1_itvr7u1 wrote

There is a lack of quality bagel shops in the area. Avoid the 9-10:30am rush on Saturday and other mornings. You can also order online ahead.

Their service could use some improvement, but they’re a bagel shop, not a sit down restaurant with waiter service.

I ordered a lox bagel sandwich the other day (online in advance) and they gave a heaping amount of lox in my bagel. Was a great start to my day.

Edit: forgot “service”*

Hank929 t1_itvrg4c wrote

Hm is that why? Had one many moons ago and it was decent, but wasn't too sure what to look for then. Nothing beats breakfast sandwiches from the Bodega. IMO

TacoCityJC t1_itvtr26 wrote

The downtown location really went down hill when that cat stopped overseeing the operation. Once the cat left the quality control all but disappeared.

ambirch t1_itvuzvb wrote

It’s good. The owners are kind of Entitled douche bags though. They were always illegally parking in front of the fire hydrant right in front of my place

22

RoonDogg85 t1_itvwdhp wrote

My theory…they’re mobbed up. This is 100% speculation with zero facts but it’s the only thing that makes sense. Why else would there be only 1 bagel place but 10 taco joints within a one mile radius?

4

Chilltopjc t1_itvwip6 wrote

With no real competition, they can be as good or bad as they want to be. If someone thinks they can make a better bagel and serve each one with a smile, maybe there’s a business opportunity for them!

25

deaddabrain t1_itw0mbc wrote

They are hit or miss. I only go for bagels, I found they skimp on the BE&Cs. Sometimes my bagel is harder than other times, and the amount of cream cheese you will get is always up in the air. If you get your food exactly how you like it, its going to be a good day go play the lottery.

terminator31991 t1_itw44n5 wrote

The ones in Bayonne are pretty good. I've tried the one near Walmart and the one near Aqui. Unfortunately, takes a drive to get to either.

Your opinion is the only non pretentious one I have seen. A lot of people here are saying that there are no other bagel shops within the entire city limits of Jersey city. Makes no sense.

6

Lobelliot t1_itwieml wrote

The bagels are awful. Not worth the wait. A friend of mine just opened a place in Montclair called Harvey's hand rolled. It's worth the 30 mom drive (vs the 30 min wait for wonder bagels) and they're just as good as any NYC bagel! Hopefully they decide to open a 2nd spot in JC

aheeookillertofu t1_itwlbox wrote

The heights location always tasted good, but damn they messed up the order e v e r y time without fail. Didn’t go downtown enough to notice issues, but honestly never thought there was good enough competition anywhere in JC to not justify waiting 30 min for a slightly, slightly above average bagel (IMHO)

1

nerdiestnerdballer t1_itwvf50 wrote

Miringanes t1_itwyg0c wrote

Wonder bagel isn’t AWFUL but I’ve had better bagels. They draw a crowd because it’s the only place in JC making bagels. For a state known for bagels, it’s pitiful though

Ezl t1_itxpkwx wrote

Hoboken Hot Bagels (6th and Washington) is great - best bagel around imo. People don’t care for their hot sandwiches (ham, egg and cheese, etc.) because they don’t have a kitchen to do them properly but the bagels themselves are great and their cold cut sandwiches are good too.

They deliver to JC but are currently closed for renovations.

2

GreenTunicKirk t1_itxssgi wrote

Man I must be going at the worst times then because the one on Bergen always takes forever. Breakfast, lunch, whatever. Only thing they do that’s fast is taking my money at the register before getting me my order.

I’ve been eating Bagels on the Hudson lately and I loveeee them, so fresh.

1

oatmealparty t1_itxubqx wrote

Maybe, I guess I'm generally there like 9, 930 which is probably after the morning rush. But even on weekends there aren't insane lines like downtown. Honestly crazy to me that downtown doesn't have another bagel place. There was that short-lived NY Nagel Cafe on Newark Ave that had grocery store bagels. Giant disappointment.

1

theiLLmip t1_itxudnc wrote

Quite a hot take. The Sip Ave location is the only one I trust. They make a slammin’ vegetable foccacia and I love that they do a whole roasted turkey for sandwiches on Sunday. Been a while since I’ve been there so I hope they still do both of those things…

2

IceSt0rrm t1_itxxmtj wrote

1

NostraDOOMus t1_itxzday wrote

Agree, easily my favorite bagel in the area. Can't beat their everything when it's still hot out of the oven and they don't skimp on the seeds/seasoning either.

Wonder if the renovation will include a kitchen. As you said, that is their weak area. I never order a hot sandwich there.

1

carapoop t1_itxzon8 wrote

Idk. Last time I went to wonderbagel, like 4 years ago, I ordered a roast turkey sub, paid, and sat down to wait. 30 minutes later I get up to ask if my food is ready, and the person I ordered from and paid asked me what I would like to order, so I'll believe anything at this point.

4

oatmealparty t1_ity1729 wrote

I say they're morons because the one time I went there and tried to get a bagel with chive cream cheese the lady looked at me like I was speaking a different language. After a couple tries and literally pointing to it I said scallion cream cheese. No dice. Green onions! Nope. Had another lady come over with no luck until a manager finally figured it out. Also they were out of egg everything bagels and that's my jam.

1

baordog t1_ity3ix3 wrote

Y’all have been going to some other dimension. There’s always a line but the bagels are better than a lot of the other local joints.

taytotoot t1_ity58zp wrote

I feel like the employees in there get off on humiliating customers. I used to like Wonder bagel until I actually went in and dealt with that

WookWook99 t1_ity5y2e wrote

There is nothing decent about their bagels unless you’re not from NJ originally. Their bagels are the equivalent if I go to a bagel store traveling in Florida, or Illinois or anywhere else that can’t make good bagels or pizza! Sure. It’s round. It has a hole. Not a good bagel. But you do you! Enjoy!

WookWook99 t1_ity7yde wrote

On my bucket list is to leave corporate America and bring the people of jersey city the bagels they deserve. I make my own bagels. They’re great, thinking of a farmers market table to start. bc obviously retail rent is atrocious. I grew up with Sonny’s bagels in south orange. And near where I worked in my 20’s, bagels 4 u in Springfield/millburn. I didn’t get egg sandwiches, you didn’t get scallion cream cheese on a single bagel. You got a brown bag of bagels and the option to purchase cream cheese to apply all on your own! You could make an egg at home with some cheese and bacon, and it would probably cost $3. The storefront in SO was tiny They just sold bagels and things you could put on bagels (even though you probably had all those ingredients at home.) If I can actually make this happen, you’re not getting coffee, you’re not getting eggs. Your getting a good, nah, great bagel to do with how you wish. Wonder bagel is fast food. I’d be just a great bagel.

Second the coffee cubes! But the Sip Ave location is by far the best. They always have the "better" egg bagels on the weekends. You simply have to call ahead about 10 minutes and just pick up.
