Last night, a friend of mine visited me in the Heights and got her catalytic converter stolen from under her blue Honda CRV. She was parked down Charles Street, and there from 5pm yesterday -8am today. So shocked this happened, please beware everyone! Apparently this is happening a lot around Jersey. If anyone has any information or tips please keep me posted.

Time to start booby-trapping my car. Don't start sawing on the bottom of it, and you won't get maimed or killed.

I think Mr. HappyArtichoke is being facetious but FYI: the law does not look favorably on booby-traps to protect property. Awful and annoying as the converter thefts are, replacing a catalytic converter is a lot cheaper than defending a lawsuit or hiring a criminal defense attorney.

I'm not being facetious at all, and it's Ms. HappyArtichoke.

The police don't do a fucking thing anyway. They're not going to do anything about that either. In fact, them not doing anything is why this problem exists at all.

My apologies Ms. HappyArtichoke.

Agreed about the police though. I don't know if JCPD even has an auto unit but it seems like, on average, for anything less than a violent crime, JCPD is uninterested in policing lately.

I remember back in the early 90s people were stealing those added headlights on Jeeps, so the thing to do was put some razor blades on the back so if someone grabbed them they'd end up paying more than the lights were worth for stitches.

This is extremely prevalent around here especially with crvs. Not much you can do except report it to the police (they won't do anything), get it replaced with an aftermarket part, and (important) ask the mechanic to install a cage or similar deterrent so that it doesn't get stolen again.

Cage is just going to take someone an extra few seconds to cut through with their angle grinder

If you drive a Honda, don’t park on the street in jersey city. They are a hot commodity. If it’s not the cat, it’s gonna be your wheels 🛞

where in the heights is it parked that someone could sit there with a grinder and no one hears it?

They’ll cover with loud music sometimes. And they’re super quick.

I moved here from London and it was crazy bad over there for it. They would do a whole block in one night, car after car hit

It's pretty much happening all over the country. Cops don't patrol really so nobody is afraid to do anything.
