Essex ~ Kingdom of the East Saxons ~ Eastern part of England settled by (Anglo-)Saxon conquerors
Sussex ~ Kingdom of the South Saxons ~ Southern part of England settled by (Anglo-)Saxon conquerors
What’s amusing is that Sussex County in New Jersey is the northernmost county, even though its namesake is literally ~ “land in the south”.

You left out the most important one: Wessex, The Last Kingdom! Ive always wondered what name the Saxons in the north took. Never heard of Nussex, and Northumbria is a bit far. Also always wondered why there's Norfolk and Suffolk but no Ostfolk and Westfolk.
