Iirc the people who live there were actually down with the buyout deal so will be glad to have it go through.

It was awhile ago though so (anyone) correct me if I’m wrong here,

You are correct. My understanding is that this development was poorly built in the first place, so the current owners would be facing big repair / reconstruction bills if they wanted to stay & keep things as-is. It's a big win for them.
