On what are you basing your assertion that Harrison is the least busy station in the system? According to the 2021 Path Ridership Report Christopher, 9th and 23rd all have significantly fewer daily passengers than Harrison.

There are a ton of commuter parking lots there and it’s the only station that is right off the highway (280). It’s a major station for weekday suburban commuters (NJ in general has a gigantic hard-on for catering all infrastructure projects towards them as they are the main tax base)

Because they built a new station. Which is because they built a new stadium. Which is because… well soccer is possibly a more corrupt sport than any on earth including horse racing.

The station was horribly obsolete even without Red Bull Arena being built. It needed to re-done regardless.

The station replacement at Harrison is basically a vanity project.

The main problems with the old station buildings were narrow staircases and no elevators. It shouldn’t cost $250 million and 10 years of construction and service disruptions to fix that.

The irony is that most passengers at Harrison spend only 15-30 seconds in the station building itself. Most of the time, people choose to wait outside on the platform.

Yet even once this boondoggle of a project is finally complete, the canopy won’t extend the entire length of the platform to keep people from getting wet in the rain or snow.

The only thing I can think of is its proximity to the Red Bulls Arena. I think it’s consistently the station with the least daily ridership in NJ and like the 3rd or 4th from the bottom if we look at the entirety of the PATH system. Current daily ridership isn’t everything though. You also have to factor in future projections.
