As the Jersey City Municipality Utility Authority works on removing all lead pipes by 2031, the city council could bar property owners from selling their homes unless their lead water lines have been replaced

So you either gotta deal with it on your own, or wait for the city to get to it over the next decade which is how long the project is projected to run.

Good way to get people to take it on themselves.

5-10k a pop and in a lot of case would require digging up basement a little. Replaced mine in 2019.

Cost me $17k + with the replacement of the concrete and sidewalk. I had a sewer drain work done too.

Can’t imagine which one of the Friends of Fulop contractors got in his pocket on this one. Guess we’ve run out of sewers to dig up and roads to pave

Fix my water lines or you can’t sell your house!

Don’t see the problem, here. The city would reimburse up to 10,000 a pop. Thank you Mayor Fulop for caring enough to want to get rid of lead pipes!

Until it gets overturned (might not) it will make prospective buyers aware of the issue and they may just negotiate some type of discount on their own due to lead pipes. Lead pipes are one of the worst things for humans and anything to speed up their replacement is good.

Did you read the article?

> The MUA is launching a program that would allow property owners that opt out of the MUA service-line replacement process to be reimbursed up to $10,000 for lead service line removal

Ok. So if it costs $15-20k you’re out $5-10k. Got it. But those are your tax dollars “reimbursing” you so yea. There we go

Sounds like you still didn’t read the article.

If homeowners choose not to opt out of the program, then their lead service line will be replaced at zero cost to them part of a program that’s largely being funded with state and federal grants.

> But those are your tax dollars “reimbursing” you so yea.

Ok?

Do you not want your tax dollars to be spent on improving the safety of the drinking water system?

Sorry. I was being awfully too pragmatic. You’re right. In order to sell my house without paying $15-20k to replace service line, I’ll have to wait until the city gets around to doing the work for me which will then allow me to sell my house without a penalty essentially. So I’m on the city’s clock on this. Sounds like a great deal. I’ll wait for them to fix the schools while I’m at it too!

Where are you getting the $15-20k replacement cost from?

Newark is spending about $7k per service line replacement.
