I just got a car for the first time, and parking around me is atrocious. Most spots have meters, there's some spots that say a permit is needed to park, zone 4 permits for 2 hours, etc. I want to know is a permit absolutely needed or could I be okay if I just loop around the block on those 2 hour spots? I'm very much new to this stuff, so any help would be appreciated.

It depends on your residential status; your building's parking situation will also determine eligibility if you are a resident.

They are cheap, as long as you have a valid NJ driver license, the car has valid NJ license plates, and all the addresses on those match your home address, which is in Zone 4, and you live in a building that does not offer parking. If any of those things aren't true, you can't get one.
Then I should be fine. I did look it up and I think I'll be better off going to the parking Authority in person, since online applications can take a week or two to come in the mail.
Fuck doing it online, go to the office in the Heights. They are real assholes in there with superiority complexes, but they will get you a parking permit on the spot.
Yeah thats what I mean. I had checked online and saw how long it takes to get one. The site even recommends going in person to get one asap.

Zone 4? Waterfront? Jus an FYI- If you live in a building with a parking garage, you’re not eligible for a street parking permit
My building used to have a parking lot, but it got torn up and converted into the preschool that occupies Haus 25. My building manager says they're "trying" to negotiate with the other building for shared space in the garage but nothing has come of it yet. This has been ongoing for months since construction on Haus 25 finished
If you get a letter from your building management stating that their parking is all occupied, the parking authority will grant you the permit. That’s pretty much what we did.
To my knowledge the building's parking is non existent since the lot got demolished.
Whatever the case, as long as you have that statement from your building saying parking is unavailable, the parking authority will grant it to you.
The women who work in the parking authority office are crazy old bats but the line moves decently. So if you see a long line it will take a while but they keep it moving for the most part. I’ve been there twice and that’s been my experience for what it’s worth. You do need to have the paperwork filled out perfectly or they lose their minds and get an attitude.
it's $20 for a year. do the first one in person because it's faster, then renew online the first of your expiration month.

My immediate reaction to this post is: Are you kidding me? You bought a car without thinking about and researching where you would put it? But there are lots of questions about parking in this sub, often from people who are considering getting a car for the first time, and it's easy for me to forget that if you come from somewhere where parking isn't a concern or just haven't used a car much, this isn't something top of mind. For posterity, can you share what your reasons were for buying a car?
It was given to me from a coworker. And primarily I got it to commute to and from work, as I have to get up pretty early(4am) to be here on time. Busses don't run that early, light rail can sometimes be unreliable, and Uber gets expensive.
Yeah, I hadn't done complete research on the parking situation around where I live, so I only knew what I saw on signs and such, but didn't know what they entirely meant. Hadnt thought about it much. Poor planning on my part I admit, which is why I came to ask. Thankfully someone else had given me some advice already and I've got plans to hit up the parking Authority later today

About 4 miles from the waterfront to rt.440. My usual commute involved taking the light rail from exchange place to west side ave, but sometimes they run late or extra early, causing me to miss my usual time and wind up late to work. At least with the car, my commute is more stable.

It doesn't matter if you loop around the block. If parking enforcement sees you there at 12:05p and then comes back at 2:30p and you're still there: you get a ticket.
I believe the rule is actually for all of Zone 4, so you can't park anywhere else in Zone 4 after 2:05p in my example.
