As a mail carrier…

Clean your route (vacant, duplicate, known past residents, deceased, invalid address, etc.)…

• If the mailer is for a known past resident (including ECRWSS/ECRWSH and/or “current resident”) - be sure to MLNA this past resident name variation. This will update NCOA (National change of address) database and the mailers for this name variation will decrease - including non-first class mail, or current resident mail, etc.

Unsure of current resident - place VACANT card in mailbox and MLNA any name not listed.

NOTE: I also search address in website truepeoplesearch - select each name variation - if name has said address as current address and they aren’t the current resident I MLNA that name variation.

You can also search address in Melissa Data (lookups/personator) - if name listed isn’t current resident - MLNA. Continue to MLNA name variations until the current resident appears. This website gets updates from USPS on a regular basis.

• Vacant boxes - if the address is officially marked vacant/no mail delivery in USPS system it ceases ALL mail including ADVO.

How to check if address is marked vacant/no mail delivery in USPS system - search address in website Melissa Data (lookups/personator). Also, if the name listed doesn’t match the current resident - MLNA this name variation.
