Door contractor

I need to get a couple of non standard size doors replaced. I was hoping someone else in Jersey City had a good experience with a contractor replacing custom doors? I need a door guy!

Unless there's something really special about those doors (size isn't a big deal), that's generally a handyman job. Ripping down a door isn't rocket science. Neither is hanging one.

Most contractors don't want to waste their time on such a job. They'll gladly replace doors as part of a gut remodel, but anyone decent is too busy for that small of a job.

I had talked to a couple of handymen, but one wanted what I thought was a crazy amount, and the other didn't really know where to get the oversized doors.

I didn't think they were that much bigger than normal, just a bit tall. Maybe I need a better handyman hookup...

I don't suppose you know a good handyman?

Well with a handyman you're kinda expected to at least do the legwork of finding the product you want. They aren't interior designers. That's not a huge deal in the age of the internet. Even Home Depot has a pretty wide variety they can order for you if they don't have it there. Just speak to one of the reps in that section towards the back. I believe they do custom as well.

Any handyman job I've done in the past (things that are just too much for me given tools or whatnot), I've got what's needed (not just ordered, but have it), and I've gotten a few names from neighbors that they've used recently and gotten some quotes. Product is already on site. They just gotta install and bring whatever tools and misc needed for the job.

A contractor is going to give you a much more insane price. You've got to make it worth them being distracted from 5 figure jobs.

Contractors are all inclusive. Handyman is more… just do the labor.

I was looking for the same. I have some door frames that are in bad condition because of weather. One door that should open in the opposite direction. I called these ‘Anderson windows’ people over for an estimate. They gave me an estimate for 10k+ per door.

How much should putting in a new prehung door cost?

Why replace good doors if it's the jambs that are bad? If the door is painted its not hard to switch it around, even if it means filling in the lock holes on one side and drilling the other. But when every kid is told to go to college instead of learning a trade, this is what we get, no one to do this work. $10k for a 1 day job? Sheesh.

I think we all inherently know that it shouldn’t cost 10k. But your points are valid and I think that’s why we are looking for someone that knows this trade.

I mean, that seems like a bit of a stretch. That's like saying boomers these days. They invented the Internet but can't figure out how to code a website. Not everyone has skills in every trade.

I understand how to do basic woodwork, but I am smart enough know the things I build won't look as good. Shelves in a closet I can build from scratch, but replacing a solid core door in my living room, I'm willing to pay to have it done right so it looks good.

Having bought the $10K+ door from Renewal by Andersen, I can say it is 100% worth it if you want the premium product. The quality of the door is exceptional and so is the install. They also have an awesome warranty / guarantee.

I don't know if it still exists, but I think Henderson Lumber used to sell custom/oversized doors. They might have been special order. Sorry. It was a long time ago.

Bloomfield Door recently ordered 2 custom doors that exit to our building’s roof deck. They rebuilt the frames (which were rotting) and installed weather-proof doors and sealed them properly. Note it took like 2 months to physically get the doors. They aren’t anything special, just a supply thing from what I understand.

Just read that this is an interior door in another comment. Our bedroom door needed replacing when we moved in (someone’s fist had an issue with it). Building is newer construction and fully ADA compliant so the doors are wider than “standard”. Home Depot in JC ordered and hung the door.

The door opens & closes so, yeah, it’s good! We didn’t price shop because the sellers were paying & our priority was convenience so idk how it compares to anything else.

Are your sure they need to be replaced? You can save a ton by having them refinished/treated.

I would use kuken brothers for the doors.

I can refer a contractor who has done doors for me before if you still need it.

Try Dykes Lumber for the door itself, they've been really helpful to me with door/window stuff.
