Been living in the JSQ area since 2019 w/ my husband (same building) and not looking forward to moving, but at this point, we don’t feel comfortable staying in our current apt.

The building is infested w/ roaches. I have complained so many times, but the management here couldn’t give a shit.

They send exterminators a few times per yr, who just set some traps & poison. It does very little to actually fix the problem. I’ve had to throw away several items of furniture, and I have anxiety about moving into a new place and bringing our roommates w/ us.

Still, we’re desperate to move. Lease is up by 2/28/23. Biggest issue is having enough for the deposit & first months rent + moving costs. I’m looking into getting a small personal loan to help, but I’m worried about not being approved.

Does anyone have advice / recommendations on assistance w/ the security deposit & moving costs?? I have a bit saved up but it’s not enough at this point. Hoping to scrape together a bit more in the next few months, but still might need some kind of help.

Any advice is appreciated! And feel free to recommend rentals in the JSQ area as well! Looking for 1-2 bedroom, $2k max, and cat friendly (no luxury housing!) Thank you!!

that’s ok. i don’t have great advice but i would say check out the west side. not far from JSQ but perhaps more apartments that are affordable, lowering your overall cost to move. i did a quick search of my area here and saw a bunch of sub-$2k apartments in two family/prewar buildings.

Sure! Feel free to PM. We still have a couple months left on the lease, but will definitely keep it in mind! Thank you!!

Definitely will check it out! I’ve seen listings in that area during my searches, so will add those to the list. Tysm!!

you’re welcome! if i hear of any rentals in my building i’ll let you know. i moved here two years ago and really like it. i saw in another comment you and your husband commute to nyc - we do too (my husband more than me) and it’s easy from where we are, right by lincoln park.

Tysm!! I really appreciate it!

Same here. He commutes more than I do, so I try to keep that in mind when looking. We definitely wouldn’t mind that area. I’ve been over to Lincoln Park a few times and really enjoyed it.

I believe there are apps out there that pay your security deposit and space it out into monthly payments that you pay. Not sure how it works but I think Rhino is one of them. Good luck!

They sound familiar!! I’ll definitely check them out. Tysm!!

Maybe the city’s Landlord/Tenant relations could help, as a start. An infestation that bad could be a health/safety issue. (In the meantime of you saving and finding a new place.)

Highly recommend this as a first step. Roaches carry disease and it 100% a health issue. They should be able to step in before having to force a move.

waterdeities OP t1_iz3fnva wrote

It absolutely is a health issue! And I’ve seriously considered contacting landlord / tenant relations. I ended up never pursuing due to other various issues, but I’ll keep it in mind, just in case. Thank you!!

If it's a building-wide issue, you may consider starting a Tenants union and/or withholding rent. You could contact the Hudson County DSA or North Jersey DSA, who have helped with tenant issues in and around Hudson County in the past:

Tysm!! Definitely a building wide issue. I’ve seen roaches in the hallways, stairways, laundry area, and other apartments.

If we do happen to end up staying, then we’re absolutely going to consider further action.

I’ll save these links!

you can look at bergen lafayette or greenville areas. if close to light rail you can be in nyc in 30 mins and you can find 3 br for 2k

I’ve seen some listings in those areas as well that looked really nice. Will definitely keep both in mind! Thank you!!!

My advice for roaches when moving is to familiarize yourself with what the eggs look like, and don’t bring any food with you from one place to another (cereal boxes, pasta etc). Take extra care when moving your garbage can or compost or anything like that.

Be super hot on checking and cleaning and taking the garbage out more frequently when you first move in. Bringing a roach from the old place to the new is not the end of the world, as long as you get it out before it lays eggs, things can quickly escalate.

We got roaches in our building when a nearby building was torn down. I fortunately spotted a cluster of eggs on the lid of the compost bin after seeing one or 2 in the kitchen, I threw the whole bin out and was super on top of the pest control for a while. This was a year and half ago and I haven’t see one since!

Tysm!!! I’ll definitely do this!

We’ll be deep cleaning our belongings & inspecting everything very closely. And a lot of items will be disposed of, but as long as we can minimize the chances of being in this kind of situation again, I’m fine with it.

What building are you in now?

waterdeities OP t1_iz39jsi wrote

I’m on Tonnelle. It’s an old as shit building but it’s fine. The only issue is the roach problem. It’s gotten too insane. Otherwise, I’d stay.

I haven’t seen anyone mention the management company of my building on here, so I’m not sure if they’re well known in JC. They go by Utopia.

peanut_buttergirl t1_iz4gnnh wrote

my best advice is to move out of JC for that budget lol. it’s only going to get more expensive and you can find something nicer and more affordable if you leave, if you don’t have to commute to NY. just my two cents

1

waterdeities OP t1_iz4stk2 wrote

Both myself & my husband work in NYC. It wouldn’t make any sense to move out of JC. And while the budget is tight, it’s still doable, and it’s also not set in stone. Thanks.

Try Harrison! Could probably find a 1 br in that budget near the PATH station. Adds like 10 mins to the commute compared to JSQ and there’s some new bars and restaurants and stuff popping up over there so it’s not a complete dead zone on the weekends

4

waterdeities OP t1_iz6z6ay wrote

Ah, great suggestion! I’ll keep Harrison in mind. Thank you!!

2k max for 1-2 beds is near impossible unless you go somewhere with roaches

I’m aware, and it’s something I’m going to be hyper focused on. It’s challenging to find good places in that range, but it’s doable. I’ve already researched a few. Im not looking for anything fancy, either. And I’m open to other suggestions, whether in the surrounding areas, etc. Thanks!

I’ve actually found quite a few listings posted on line in the area and in the range that I’m looking for. I’m just very open to other suggestions, as well as in the surrounding areas. Thanks.

Listings posted online and actual apartments you can rent are not always the same thing. I wanted the same thing you wanted, but found out the hard way.
