Possibly given how wet everything is going to be and how quick the temp is going to drop + wind.

Things are going to ice up quick, and things like overpasses and anything overhead can be an ice hazard. It’s rare for something like this to happen. Especially with this much rain just before.

Wouldn’t be shocked if a lot of bridges are closed for a bit due to quickly freezing surfaces. Train will be more reliable than crossing the GWB.

Oh and they can’t really salt until the last minute since the rain will wash it away. If it were snow that wouldn’t be an issue.

Tomorrow will be interesting. Hope everyone stays safe.

This was really well explained. I didn’t even think about the salting while it’s raining; and the risk of the salt just being washed away if they salt while it’s still raining.

I also don’t know how they plan to salt the roads when the temperature is forecast to drop so quickly in a shorter period of time. I’d guess that they need a lot more widespread salting early on when the temperature drops below 15 F than if it were to drop below like 30 F.

Yea. I’m not sure what the strategy is. Presumably they’re going to salt the crap out of bridges and places that will freeze first then backtrack on the rest.

I honestly can’t recall last time this scenario played out. It’s normally rain or snow. Rain turning to ice at this scale is uncommon.

For PATH, it’s best to keep an eye on their Twitter account.

If ice does turn out to be an issue, you won’t find out until they start cancelling trains. They’re not going to give people much advance notice because the conditions are too unpredictable.

For what it’s worth, PATH seems to be pretty reliable during winter storms except when there’s heavy snowfall and snow drifts impacting the outdoor tracks. Even then, they are usually back to normal within a few hours.

Anyone know if the cats who hang out in the community garden on Brunswick will be okay? Do they have somewhere warm to go?

I’ll gladly donate food and stuff for them if you know who manages the garden

FYI - Wet leaves and the residue they leave behind is more trouble on tracks than ice. PATH will be fine.

Animals are pretty good at not dying from the cold, they will likely be okay. If you want to bring them inside they would certainly be better off though.

I would if I could, but the cats have resisted my attempts to lure them from the garden (I don't have access to it). But someone leaves cat food out for them, so I'm hoping that the same person has also left them some type of shelter
