Corto is awesome and bring your own. Yes, Razza is worth the hype

Corto is basically the only restaurant on this side of the river that can go toe to toe with hyped-up NYC restaurants & win. fighting words but I stand by them. love them, have been like 6 times now & will keep going.

Couldn’t agree more. Best restaurant in JC or Hoboken

RhodiaRoad12 t1_j341awu wrote

Okay I’ll try them again but my first time I tried so many dishes and all of them disappointed me. I thought of nyc restaurants with similar menus and I just can’t put Corto in the same league.

I've been wanting to try Corto but inside seating seams to be very limited for reservations. How is the heated outdoor patio? Is it comfortable during cold nights?

InTheHeights87 t1_j2z4s2c wrote

Can’t recommend Corto enough!!!

Seating outside is super comfortable even with the colder weather. The entirety of the back patio is enclosed on the sides with heavy duty tarp - there’s just a slight gap at the bottom, so wear heavy socks.

My partner and I went on 12/23 (one of the single digit temp days), and it was definitely cold but still manageable and more than worth it for the food and service. They’ve got multiple heaters which warm the space up - we just went on the coldest/windiest night possible.

It's slightly less of a hassle these days, especially during the week. It's a good pizza no doubt about that. feel like its impossible to actually meet the hype at this point.

Satis Bistro is a nice romantic date night spot for dinner and Junto bar for drinks. I personally think a fun date night is Archer Bar (especially Sunday nights) or, of course, barcade! :) depends on what you’re in to though. 🤙🏼

lizthelibrarian21 t1_j2zblmr wrote

I love Satis and just discovered Junto, despite going to Franklin Social for over 2 years.

3

InTheHeights87 t1_j2z52uc wrote

I personally found the drinks and service at Junto to be disappointing given the price and hype. Definitely has cool vibes, though.

2

BadNewsBenjamin t1_j2zb4tp wrote

TBH last time we were there (about a month ago), I was turned off by the music and drinks were not amazing. I’m not sure if that’s how it is now? I truly hope not because they used to be A+ service / drinks and low downtempo music…

Date night: Ondo. High-end Korean. Right near the water. Great ambiance. Incredible service. Impeccable food. Love the decor.

You'll thank me later.

biso_21 t1_j3745jt wrote

Newer spot and yea - it's absolutely an elevated experience. One of the best meals, and cocktails, that I've had in JC/Hoboken.

yesiam_samiam t1_j2zv6xh wrote

I dunno maybe controversial but I didn’t think razza was a mind blowing pizza experience…..

Don’t get me wrong, tasty for sure and gives off the artisanal vibes but for the price…idk. Didn’t feel the value.

For date night I’ve loved Kitchen Step, Orale (honestly just get drunk on whatever the frozen marg special is and you’ll have a great night), Light Horse tavern has great vibes and food but I’ve been there a few times with reaaaalllyyy long food wait times, Wurstbar for cozy vibes!

lightspeed_derping t1_j30tzqy wrote

you're not alone. I feel like I'm losing my mind whenever I see people hyping up Razza. I have never had pizza there that was better than Porto's, and I don't think Porto has outstanding pizza. shrug.

2

These_Friendship920 t1_j31uora wrote

Ive been to Razza several times and never tasted the pizza magic. High quality ingredients seem to be the highlight, but the final product is just meh.

2

Potential_Ship5662 t1_j383lyk wrote

100%. People here are arguing with me about Razza. I’m not saying it’s shit, but it isn’t that great. The guy got a minute of fame, that’s it. Porto is meh, good place to go though. Decent menu.

lorajae t1_j2zlhl5 wrote

My fave date night is Cellar 335. :)

I like Razza too.

Big fan of the fun cocktails at Cellar! The new Madame Claude had some good drinks too. Both fun for dates! :)

Recently had a date night at Cellar for the first time recently, can confirm that it’s a great date night spot!!

2

It's definitely good. Would I wait on line more than 30 minutes like some people have? No. Not for pizza

12

mickyrow42 t1_j2ylzrb wrote

30 sounds good tbh. I've seen like 2hrs in peak spots.

5

Salt_the_snail_Gail t1_j31sp4b wrote

They take reservations now and you can order pickup online and it’s been pretty quick every time I’ve done it

Yes, Razza rules. Other good date night spots: Skinner’s, Light Horse, White Star (either location), and Latham House.

6

scubastefon t1_j3eh797 wrote

Skinner’s is OG Newark Ave, the first of what was to come. I’ll be sad when it’s gone. Though to be fair I haven’t gone there in years either.

Really good pizza. I personally like Tino’s more, but Razza is good pizza

4

assanza t1_j2yrwd0 wrote

Same here. I prefer Tino's because it's more filling, and cheaper. Razza's is more like a piece of art, it's excellent pizza, it just won't fill you up.

Recurringferry t1_j2y92aa wrote

It's great. One of the few places that actually met the lofty expectations (cough, bread and salt).

3

InTheHeights87 t1_j2z5gnt wrote

Bread and Salt prices are for sure high for the pizza, but the quality is excellent! It’s not a once a week pie, but worth the splurge on occasion.

7

ffejie t1_j30gm6k wrote

Bread and Salt pizza is a different kind of pie, one that really should be experienced. I really loved it. Their bakery is actually more impressive though. They had some amazing bombolini last time I was there - maybe the best I've ever had.

The pricing for the pizza at Bread and Salt is ridiculous. I think it's $23 for a ~medium mozzarella pie (they call this "half") and $46 for an enormous two-box pie (it is exactly double and they call this "whole"). If this were in a fancy sit down restaurant (ie Razza) it would be a high price. But it's a to-go shop.

Good for them, I hope they stay in business forever, but next time I go, I'll skip the long wait and just get a pastry or a bread.

5

InTheHeights87 t1_j31k6c3 wrote

Agreed! Both the filled bombolini and the plain sugared are the best donut style pastries in Jersey City texture and flavor wise. Probably for the best they’re usually only available for a few hours each week. 😂

blueranger36 t1_j2yrp9j wrote

Yes razza is great.

Other fav spot is The pet shop! All vegan menu and is phenomenal. I also have a ton of others as well.

Razza is worth hype but not so much as the hype it gets.

Frankie's is basically across the street and it's great, but seems like no one has heard of it.

Corto others have mentioned, BUT it's amazing and worth mentioning again.

The Franklin is another great BYOB.

Edwards is a top tier steakhouse imo.

1

RhodiaRoad12 t1_j340pc1 wrote

Maybe I should try Corto again? But man even my bok choy was overcooked and overall everything we got was just okay. It could’ve been a bad night? Frankie’s is also a great spot. I don’t mind that no one’s heard of it because it’s one of my favorites.

lazysloath1 t1_j38zidn wrote

Exponent_0 t1_j3cyzob wrote

Razza is good pizza. But lets be honest, it's pizza. Not life-changing pizza. There are a lot of good recommendations here.

1

Potential_Ship5662 t1_j31nmb3 wrote

Nah. Razza’s pizza really isn’t all that the media hypes it up to be. Although they classify themselves as “artisanal” pizza, they walk a very thin line on Neapolitan style. If you want a really special place, I would highly suggest S. Egidio in Ridgewood, NJ. Very difficult to get into. The pizza there is 1000x better and their menu is also a much higher caliber. You cannot make reservations.

Razza is okay but unfortunately a lot of people around here don’t know what good food is. I say this because of the hype JC-area folks give to Razza. The Jersey City food scene is pretty disappointing; disappointing because I would just expect more from this area, not that there aren’t a number of good spots. There are a few great locations such as Corto, ONDO, DOMODOMO, and I’m sure there are at least 3-4 more I can name… Kitchen Step, Battello, Light Horse Tavern.

I’ve been to Liberty Prime Steakhouse. It was okay. Nothing spectacular. I have not been to Edward’s yet.

If you want really great food every single time you go, take a trip to Houston’s at the Riverside Square Mall in Hackensack, NJ. You’ll need to make a reservation days in advance. Also, go check out Fiorentini in Rutherford, NJ. Tell Chef Kevin that Dave sent you.

biso_21 t1_j37550b wrote

My guy, Razza and Dan Richer both have a national following, especially for the dough/crust. Goes way beyond just the positive times review, and it ain't just a JC hype thing. Maybe you don't know quite as much as you think you do.

0

Potential_Ship5662 t1_j37a5vi wrote

Idc who they are lol their pizza and crust in particular aren’t that great. The menu is subpar.

0

Potential_Ship5662 t1_j37adf9 wrote

Additionally, just because they have a following doesn’t mean anything. Most people don’t know what good food actually is. I’m not saying their pizza sucks, I’m saying it doesn’t deserve the hype.

Just because something gets attention doesn’t mean it is good. Omega watches have far superior technology compared to Rolex watches, but Rolex still gets the attention. You’re mad ignorant

Buig fan of Clove Garden. Quiet, BYOB, Indian food. It's relatively cheap, bollywood music playing in the background. What more could you want in a date?

RhodiaRoad12 t1_j2ynk54 wrote

YES. Razza is great. Get the chickpea dish! Do not go to Corto though. So much potential yet such bland and poorly cooked food.

kevstev t1_j37cc8v wrote

You got downvoted a bunch for this, but I have had some fantastic meals at Corto, yet also some absolutely terrible ones as well- consistency is a real issue there. We went on a holiday weekend in 2021, either July 4th or labor day, and it was like they just forgot the salt... in everything. Another time, we had the chocolate cake, and it appears they used fish sauce instead of whatever oil they typically used- it was... gross. Another time they hyped up a smoked pork dish, and I love bbq'ed pork, and it was extremely dry, it would have been better used to resole my shoes. Less extreme is that the chicken diablo or whatever the specific name is can go from "taco bell spicy" to "omg more water please ASAP".

On the other hand, when its on, its on, and is one of the best places in JC. The only others that rival are Ondo- which I am shocked has not blown up yet, the food, drinks and ambience are amazing, and its not even that expensive, and the new Madame was great the two times I went as well. Both are pushing the envelope to new places.

RhodiaRoad12 t1_j37ddn8 wrote

I don’t even know where to begin with how my food tasted. The most disappointment was the pasta. Figured you can’t mess that up but the texture was akin to reheating pasta in the microwave. Rubbery at the exposed parts and tender in others. I guess I could try again in a different season.

Yeah the down votes suck. Ha!
