Domo domo. Not even close

Agreed that Domo Domo is easily the best, but you’ll have to pay for it. For an everyday order, Honshu is good.

Cannot upvote this enough. I had a hand roll at Domo Domo for the first time a few months ago, bit into it and was like WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS OTHER SHIT I'VE BEEN CALLING SUSHI ALL MY LIFE??? Anything else is totally ruined for me now.

Maybe I'm too much of a purist when i'm craving sushi, but I just have not been able to enjoy Domo Domo. Tried two of their courses and even tried to pick a la carte, but every time, there were so many overpowering fusion-y toppings covering the fish. The Honshu omakase is the polar opposite - I've had shima aji and kinmedai there, stuff that surprised me to see at a "local" spot.

Domo Domo cocktails were great though, and I still want to check out Ondo at some point.

I’m not a fan of the flavorful toppings - I am also a fish purist and appreciate the fresh and authentic flavor of Honshu’s options.

Ondo is a way better restaurant than Domo Domo. It's almost like a restaurant group run by two Korean dudes is better at making Korean food than Sushi.

I was actually a little underwhelmed by Ondo. Thought Domo Domo was wayy better.

nycdevil t1_j6mhlkn wrote

Only if you're saying that Domo Domo isn't close to sushi. It isn't. The rice is so completely underseasoned that it's much closer to kimbap than sushi.

Wisp food truck. It’s amazing.

I heard great things about Wisp. I was so disappointed when I tried it - their toro was so chewy and their fish was just OK. They did give me a refund on the toro since I got a roll and 3 pieces of sushi which was nice!

I think Komegashi Too has fresher fish for about the same price.

SirNewt t1_j6o8hme wrote

Maybe it’s changed in recent years but I don’t think komegshi too is good at all. Overpriced, mediocre quality and terrible service. I used to live right next to it and would travel to Honshu every time. I was even given a gift card and reluctantly went back because it was expiring.

I also think Domo Domo is extremely overpriced. Menu if wack (imo, but I get it if you like that). Fish was very high quality though. But if I wanted high quality sushi for that price there are much better options in NYC.

Honshu has remained my local favorite by far for 6 years.

I always stayed away from Komegashi after seeing lower rating but I'll give it a shot now!

I have been disappointed with my last 2 orders from there. This last weekend the salmon was very fatty and the yellowtail just tasted off.

I really like Okinawa in Hoboken! They deliver in JC.

THIS is where I order from!

I actually ordered Honshu once and I thought it was so overpriced and I didn't think it was that great.

3

SirNewt t1_j6o8tyk wrote

I don’t really do delivery sushi so usually end up at Honshu but Okinawa is great and a go-to for the rare delivery.

monkeypox458 t1_j6knhpc wrote

I wouldnt say the best, I've found a piece of plastic in my fish from there before

NIKKI150 OP t1_j6knlg9 wrote

Wow I’m surprised! I’ve ordered there probably a dozen times and never had an issue. They have the freshest fish I’ve found in JC. Any recommendations?

Honshu was the best when they were upstairs the diner on the corner of Montgomery and it was BYO.

komegashi too and domodomo probably have it beat. it does look good though depending on what the prices are

I went and did their Omakase. The chef took a plate from another customer for me to use that he had already eaten off of. I like the sushi but not going to trust what going on in the kitchen if they do that in front of me

2

NIKKI150 OP t1_j6p6vc4 wrote

Ew! Honestly I probably wouldn’t try their Omakase just because there are such better options that specialize in Omakase under $100 per person in the city. For a quick take out it’s my favorite, though!

As long as its not racist ass east hana that screams at customers of color to not come in (because they assume they are delivery workers -- who, of course, deserve respect too). That place is gross.

I found east hana fish quality terrible, and overpriced to boot

Money isn't an option? Domo Domo. Money's a factor? Kura. Don't want to wait two hours for a table/seat? Eh, Honshu is pretty good. I've heard decent things about the newish spot on York and Barrow, but It'll be hard to top Kura for me.

1

NIKKI150 OP t1_j6mpy1l wrote

Never tried Kura! I’ll have to order it this week.

Jahooodie t1_j6mzs40 wrote

It's really more an in person experience, but they do do special boxes/takeaway

I'm surprised it looks so fresh in your picture. Last time I ordered Honshu, the fish looked a bit dark and not very fresh.

Interesting …. I’m very picky about my sushi especially when it’s take out and I’ve never been disappointed with the freshness of their fish. Crossing my fingers I don’t have a bad experience!

Looks delicious, but they don't list their prices... so... yeah, nope. Not going there until I know the prices. And I'm definitely not showing up without knowing, because then you're a captive audience.

I order from them all the time, prices are pretty normal for sushi. It's one of the only sushi places I've found that is really consistent - not the best sushi you've ever had, but solid.
