I’ve never had an issue with Supremo’s produce, but I normally get my produce from fruit & veggie markets on Central like Young’s.

The little produce shops on Central are great. Check a few out. They each have slightly different stock. I personally like Lucky Farms. It’s small but they have great variety and produce. Decent dry food selection as well.

Sweet Pineapple on Central next to the optometrist, corner of Bowers St. Used to shop there frequently for produce when I lived nearby. Granted I haven't been in like a year since moving so idk how it is now but it's worth checking out

Riverview farmers market on summer Sundays. Then I leave the heights for produce. Food Bazaar union city or 99 Ranch.

Fresh Central has been a consistent one for me. Stop & Shop has relatively consistent produce too.

I've been going to Young Farm on Central & Hutton for roughly 20 years. They also now own the place on Central & Bowers next to Dolce de Leche.

Try to make a short trip to Newark Ave, stores like D-Mart, apna Bazaar, big bazaar have good produce.

If you think those are bad, you should have seen the C-Town they tore down on Central.

Anyway, I'll second the small produce shops around the neighborhood. Otherwise take the elevator down to Hoboken.

You have two choices in JC: produce that is “basmado” (so green it will rot before it ripens) and produce you need to eat TODAY. (I guess 3 if you like to pay freshdirect $20 for 5 oranges.) if you live near them, the produce markets will sell you passable produce for TODAY. Just expect to need 3-4 trips a week, and nothing will last beyond 72hrs under any circumstance.

If you’re going in to buy something quick and use it that night then it’s fine.

I prefer to support the smaller places for produce but sometimes a one stop shop is necessary on the way home.

I like lucky farms and the small spots across the street. I typically check prices and produce as a comparison since they are directly across from one another. Food bazaar in union city or the shop rite in bayonne. Always scan the circulars before you go.

I swear if anyone opened a fresh fruit stand in the Hilltop area they would absolutely have cornered the market. It’s a fresh food desert.

Been to supremo a few times and while it’s great for packaged/boxed items I don’t think it’s good for fresh produce imo. Every time it went bad in a few days. So I just go to Whole Foods, shop rite in Hoboken, or Trader Joe’s. Otherwise local seasonal food markets but they can be even more expensive.

Great vegetable store (with some other staples and great smoothies) on JFK at Thorne Street.

Incredibly cheap, too.

I've lived around the corner from Supremo for years. There's a lot not to like, but their produce is usually better than ShopRite for what it's worth. It's no farm stand, but it's decent for the basics and better for anything you might need for Latin-American dishes.
