Good Evening,

Anyone here work for the state of mass? I recently accepted a new position, I’ll be moving from one state agency to another.

My question is; will my sick and vacation time carry over with me since I’m just moving from one state job to another?

Are they with the same branch of government? You're not switching between an agency and a court, for example?

They should carry over no problem. I know a few people from my agency who have moved to other agencies like (DOT and Court) and they've kept all their sick and vacation.

Did you ask your union? 99% of mass state employees have a union. Talk to you union Rep asap. FYI I work for SEIU 509 we may represent you. Check your pay check to see what local you’re paying dues to.

Sick will not. Your seniority towards your vacation time will but you time won’t show up until it would for the new job (I get mine in July)

It depends on what the agencies are. I just transferred from a community college to a university and they took my sick and personal, but not vacation. I believe it depends on what the new institution is willing to take.

You also have to be careful not to have a break in service so you don't lose your health insurance benefits. So if you take time off between jobs make sure it's actually vacation time time from the job you're leaving!

I’m finishing on a Friday and starting the new gig the following Monday, so I don’t think that will be an issue with me. I’m sure I’ll find out this week, but I’m hoping because I’m just changing departments, I can carry something over.

It will suck to lose the sick and vacation time
