I recently went to a tint shop for a quote on window tint and they told me to be careful if I want to go below 35% tint because there is a new law that not only prohibits inspectors from passing my car with illegal tints, but also charges any shops that do end up passing a car with illegal tint a fee of up to $10k. Has anyone else heard of such a law? Ive looked online and haven't found anything about that fee or if a shop is required to fail a car with illegal tint.

In short: inspections are recorded now, and the state has threatened to crack down on shops letting things slide. So the shops aren’t going to look the other way on anything anymore. Tinting isn’t an exact science, so if you ask to be right at the limit, and the meter at the inspection station shows you’re over, they’re going to fail you. There was another thread where someone was advising to go for 30% so you have some room if the final product measures out a little darker.

No, this is not new for 2023. This has been the case for a long time. Also, if you apply 35% tint, it will sometimes measure lower, like 32%.

Then you haven't looked very hard.

Get your inspection sticker THEN get your tint done.

I mean that only buys you a year unless you plan on getting it removed then re-done each year.

Yeah that's the law they really can't let anything slide nowadays. The state owns cameras in every inspection station recording the whole thing. Just get legal tint, it's not worth the hassle. If you really want it get it done after you get a sticker. I had super dark tint before and never had any trouble from the police for it but getting a sticker was a PITA. I knew someone who would let it slide but they can't get away with that anymore. The dark driver and passenger windows kinda sucked while driving at night, too.

I’ve lived in Mass for all of my 47 years. I only know of two groups of folks who tint their windows that dark:

  • Cops who beat their significant other; and

  • Folks who struggle financially

Why is giving off that vibe a priority of yours?
