Massachusetts train derails, no hazardous cargo reported

Five freight train cars derailed in Massachusetts on Thursday, but no hazardous materials were being hauled and there were no reports of injuries, according to authorities.

The freight cars that toppled over at about 11:30 a.m. were carrying sealed containers of trash and recycling material, the Ayer Fire Department said in a social media post. Each car was carrying double stacked containers for a total of 10 containers, according to the state emergency management agency.

The railcars were not moving along the tracks at the time they came off the tracks. Local residents report that the tracks at the place of derailment tilt to the side, and that was a known problem. Even better, the commuter rail from Leominster to North Station uses the same poorly-maintained tracks.

I understand there's a news effect, where if you hear news of, say, a suicide, suicide rates go up. Same thing happens, horrifically, with school shootings.

But is it literally everything? Trains just derail now? Or have they always derailed like this and we just haven't gotten reports?

I think it's always been like this and we just didn't hear about how poorly maintained our infrastructure was. I'm sure bridges collapse more than we'd like to think too.
